Lancashire / Re: Lost in Ince
« on: Tuesday 23 July 24 14:12 BST (UK)  »
There are two Warrington Roads! One goes through Ince in Makerfield and Rock house is located on it. The second starts in Wigan as the B5386 before joining the A49. In the 1845 map it is marked as the Warrington and Wigan Trust but would have been known simply as Warrington Road.

It is on this road where the Hare & Hounds Inn was located just west of where the Hare & Hounds Yard was located at 104a Warrington Road. The Inn, itself, was located at Lane End.

The Wigan Directory 1869 - Lamberhead Green, - Richardson Isaiah, Hare Hounds Thwaites’ delf.

A large swaithe of the land to the west of Rock House would have been farmland, probably belonging to owners of Ince House but named after Rock House (rather like "Home Farm"). This would have been gobbled up by the industrialization but with the historic name remaining.

Basically, this means a birth location of Rock Farm could be any of the farm cottages on that land. If the birth was in one of the hamlets I feel sure that it would have been recorded as such.

I have attached three maps. The smallest scale shows the proximity of the Hare and Hounds to Rock House (about 2km as the crow flies).

Father's name - Felix
Mother's name - Mary
Sibling's names - Thomas, James, Mary Anne, Susan Catherine, Sarah, Joseph.
He would have joined up in Scotland (he was living in Glasgow at the time).

Armed Forces / Boer War lookup
« on: Sunday 08 May 11 18:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm trying to find info on my Ggrandfather, Patrick Bannigan (born in Monaghan, Ireland c1872), who served in the Boer War.  What little information that I have on him is that he was enlisted in the Royal Artillery No 84565 but deserted a year after enlistment.  He had joined under the name of Clifford, not Bannigan.  "He has evaded the authorities until a week ago when he was found out, and taken in charge.  His wife is now destitute."  says a report, found in the records of the Mitchell Library, Glasgow.

I believe that he was then, after punishment, sent out to South Africa.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Viv,

Thanks for the info on Felix.  The Felix you are referring to is probably the great-grandson of the Felix I am looking for (Died in Ballybay, County Monaghan, Ireland in 1881)
I am pretty sure that most of the Bannigans originated in this area (at least that is as far back as I have managed to trace them).  Felix seems to be a name that recurs quite often as Felix was also the name of Felix's (D. 1881) father.
If you have any info on your Felix's ancestry I would be very interested to see it.

Thanks again,

Des

Hi,
I think that what you are telling me is that James Smith's sister married someone from the Bannigan line.  And, if I have picked this up right, James's daughter married her cousin.
Do you have
any census information on them?
the forename of the Bannigan?

Thanks

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 1851 census - Manchester

The 1871 census cannot refer to my Sampson Lawton (b.1799) because he died in 1864.

I am interested in all Sampson Lawtons though as I am sure that they share a common root.  Where was this one living in 1871 - I have not found him on Ancestry.com yet.
