Hi

Many thanks for your replies, and so quickly!
Ady - the roll information is very helpful.
Martin - That is the surname I was expecting! Thankyou! I shall certainly have to do some more digging now.

Thank goodness thought I was going off the trail there as the previous surname I had come up with was so unfamiliar!

Thanks again

World War One / Royal Naval Silver War Badge
« on: Wednesday 22 August 12 01:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have found a Silver War badge amongst my late fathers possesions. It has a number stamped on the back with the prefix RN. I found out that the records are now searchable on Ancestry so I typed in the number minus the prefix and got someone I wasnt expecting who appears to have not served in the Navy according to the service records. I realised I had not put in the RN prefix but that doesnt seem to make a difference.

Am I searching in the wrong indexes or is this actually the correct man and my Dad has random badges (not unlikely) or is this an individual who has not yet come up in my research (again not unlikely as I have only recently started on this side of the tree.)

The badge number is RN21096.

Does the prefix actually make a difference as I have heard that there are several batches of numbers with different prefixs or no prefix at all. Are they actually completely different numbers or could there be several with the same number, just a different prefix.

With Thanks

Hi JanJim

I am the Challis contact that Newburychap was speaking of. I haven't looked at my family history file for a while due to other commitments however am happy to assist where I can.

I am connected to Daniel and Elizabeth Challis of Newbury who had three children as far as I have found so far. Jane, Daniel and Joseph. I am descended from the son Joseph who moved his family to Wokingham around 1868. In 1845 Daniel Snr would have been 64 and Daniel Jnr 24. Daniel Jnr and his wife Mary are listed on the 1851 Census at Bartholomew Street, his occupation being Victualler. In 1861 they are listed at The "City" London Apprentice Inn as Liscensed Victualler. Daniel Jnr dies in 1870 and his wife Mary continues to run the Public House with the help of a servant until she herself dies in 1893. Daniel Jnr and Mary had a son Daniel, along with other offspring and it would appear this Daniel and his wife Emily continue. In 1901 Emily is listed as the Liscensed Victualler with their daughter after this Daniel dies in 1900. I have not looked into why she discontinued at the London Apprentice, it may be that with a young child she re-married.

The surname New does ring a bell for some reason but a connection does not immediately spring to mind. Would be interested to discover how things fit together and how he springs up in your research.

Regards

Hi Vicwinann

I have been researching the Challis' of Newbury myself and might be able to help you make the connection. Which are the names you are looking to link to Joseph and Harriet Ann Banning?

Hiya Newburychap

Thanks for the info and wished I could have chatted more on the night but was kind of left holding the fort in the corner!

Sorry not to have had a chance to speak to your other half as well.

Thanks for the valuable info, I was looking in the Police book the other day but just looked up items from the index, will have to have a re-look. Will certainly follow the info up.

Thanks again

Berkshire / The Cowslads, Newbury

Hi

Can anyone shed any light on what or where the Cowslads were in Newbury. I have been digging on the net and one website suggests that Donnington Priory was formerly the Cowslads.

The name has popped up against a 13 yr old boy listed with his family on the 1815 Toomer Census but which notes that he was "in Cowslads".

Was it an institution, correctional facility, hospital or school maybe?

The Common Room / Re: Mahala - where does this name come from?
« on: Wednesday 30 May 07 12:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I also have this name twice in my family tree, also from Essex around the early 1800's. Variations on the spelling include Mahalia and Mahala. There is also a daughter Septemmia who changed her name to Emma when she was a servant and Mahalia changed to Rachael although I havent as yet determined which of these names either was born with.

I had thought that Mahalia sounded kind of Indian but obviously there are British origins.
