Caernarvonshire / Hugh Bellis d.1695 Clynnog
« on: Today at 07:55 »
Hi

I think I got myself through a research brickwall, but now hit another!
I have the will of this man and seen the burial record, so he is definitely transcribed as a BELLIS. I have seen that all his offspring use Hughes, and one of them (William Hughes d.1731) definitely lived in Brynhafod, Clynnog. Which ties in with the specific area many strands of my family came from. However how does Bellis work with the patronymic naming system. I have read that it is from an anglicized version of "son of ellis". However I've not seen any connection with anyone using the Bellis name - just Ellis in my family tree. Would there be a reason why this happened?
A witness to his will is an Ellis Ellis. The only one that appears in that same time frame, is an Ellis Ellis (d.1719) from Ystumllyn.  I am thinking maybe he is Hugh Bellis' brother?
However I have just seen the Griffiths Pedigree for this family (with Ellis Ellis in it) and a Hugh Bellis does not feature. However, Griffith Ellis (Ellis Ellis & potentially Hugh Bellis' father) - marries into a family which lives in the area of where all my Clynnog strands seem to evolve from, namely Pryscyni (Bryscyni), Foel. Which makes things interesting. My question is how accurate are the Griffiths Pedigrees? and could this Hugh Bellis somehow be part of this Ellis family - or alternatively would Hugh Bellis me more likely to have come from somewhere else? There seems to be lots of Bellis names in the Mold, Flintshire area (but no link to this Hugh Bellis) as far as I can see.  Annoyingly not a single google result comes back on the google search Hugh Bellis Clynnog. Any views/pointers are most welcome.

Oh his wife was Lowry Roberts!

Many thanks, I will take a look, hopefully it will show up, but I know he died in 1723, so over 100 years before this tithe book. Who knows? I will post back if I spot it!!

Merionethshire / Morris Ap Robert (Morris Roberts)

Hi,

I've managed to work back my family tree to a Morris Ap Robert (Morris Roberts) who I am lead to believe was quite a reknownd poet/bard around the 1700s. There is a decent amount of info on the internet about him, but I am struggling to find out how many children he had. I have found records for two of his daughters Margaret Morris ( who marries a Calvinistic minister John Evans in 1744 ) and Bridget Morris who marries my direct relative Humphrey Edwards ( who was also a calvinistic exhorter ). There are some suggestions that there are more children, one an Edward Thomas Morris who was a furniture maker, but can't find any birth records for him. Around this time it looks like Baptism records at Llanycil are in Latin? so I am seeing a few different spellings.  If anyone could point me to a place which might have a view on the number and names of his offspring I would be eternally thankful.

Also in his bio, he is stated as being from Tynllidiart, Llanuwchllyn. He later went and lived in Bala I believe. But does anyone know where Tynllidiart was/is?

Photograph of a procession of the Fleshers (butchers) in the 1890s. This was one of the last Trade processions of the Incorporations of Dumfries. I am guessing one of my relatives would have been in this shot! Also noted a pub in Dumfries called the Fleshers Arms

Kirkcudbrightshire / Re: John McEwan marries Isabella Smith in Troqueer, 1846 - Help!!

Not 100% on James McEwan / Agnes Smith angle, but all dates tie in. I did a little more digging there was an Agnis Smith b.1789 in Troqueer to a James Smith and Janet Primrose. They had other children as I can see Kathrine Smith and David Smith.  A bit more digging around the Primroses see that some of them are Curriers & Tanners in Troqueer - which may be a link.

On the Isabella Smith side, I can see a James Smith being born to a John Smith & Mary Pagan in Troqueer in 1785.

and as an alternative, a James Smith being born to a John Smith & Catherine Herries, in Kirkgunzeon in 1787.

I've got a Mary McKenzie Reid being born in 1785 in Troqueer, to a James Reid & Margaret McDonald in 1785.

and as alternative a Mary Reid being born to a Peter Reid & Mary Kelly in 1782 again Troqueer.

I've some Herries and Pagan's in DNA matches so it's difficult to plump for either one without further proof.

Also found out that there at least a couple of fleshers in Maxwelltown/Troqueer in the early 1800's with the name McKune ( a Joseph & William )- which could have been a variation on McEwan.

I know with many braches of my family tree around this time, many people married others from similar professions, areas and families - so this could all be slightly interlinked. But who knows!

As to point out the fact further this is the transciption (I think) of the John MacEwan / Agnes Smith marriage on Ancestry!

I think it is really difficult to pinpoint McEwans down as there are so many variations on the name being transcribed, I've seen MacEwan, McKewn, McKune, McKen, Mackewen, McEoun and Mackeown in various trees - and I seem to have DNA matches to people sharing all the above names. Matching back to Agnes Smith seems the easier route and that gives me John McKown which is the one you mention above. Thank you again for the help provided!

Getting back on to the McEwan angle for a minute, I started looking at the Kirk Session Minutes in Troqueer for 1810. I came across this entry, can't fully decipher it all, but it looks like a marriage between a John McEwan and an Agnes Smith in 1810. The John McEwan I am looking at was born in 1811, so would tie in.

I've found James Smith marriage certificate. He married 1877 to a Jane Dickson, he has his father as Hugh Smith, mother Mary Grierson.
