Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: deleted name on 1911 census
« on: Saturday 21 June 25 12:02 BST (UK)  »

That said, there is a census that could be the above William, living with his father (Mr INSTANCE...), a widower. (Any chance your people didn't marry because she was already married...?)

The William Instance next door with his father has been added in a different hand. So it does look as if he moved between households, and there was a bit of confusion where he was on census night. Or he was really with Mrs Dickson, but they thought he ought to be listed with his father.

A relative of mine was on two census returns in 1871. He was down as being at his parents' and also with his in-laws (with his wife).

Well, it starts off with “Seeking work.”

added: birth year is 1924 so Not pre[viously] emp[loyed]?

My mum's record says "Not previously employed", so I'm sure you are right. She was born in 1923.

Denbighshire / Re: PARRY Families 1700s - Rhiwlas, Llansilin, Llangollen

If you scroll down to the bottom of the link that I gave to the Notitiae, you'll find a link listing (in blue) of the individual places in Alpha order.

E.G Llansilin is here:

https://viewer.library.wales/4776531#?c=&m=&s=0&cv=221&xywh=-1895%2C-136%2C5738%2C2718

Note that it says

Quote
There were no returns from the following parishes: Abergele, Carno, Eglwys Fach, Llanarmon, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr, Llanbrynmair, Llandysilio, Llanefydd, Llanrwst, Llanycil, Merchwiel, Nannerch, Penegoes, Pennant, Pentre Voelas, St Asaph, Sychtyn, Wrexham.

I think Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr is included in Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant. I can't quite make out all of what it says at the top of the Llanrhaeadr record, but Llanarmon MM is definitely there. The records are arranged by hundreds, and if you scroll down to page 218, you will find Llanarmon. Similarly Sychtyn is on page 222.

Thanks for the records - it's a brilliant resource. A lot of my dad's family come from some of these parishes.

Based on your comments, I looked forward a few pages now and there is "L S d" in 1720 and "s d" in 1721, so it looks like you are right about the fees.
Thank you for your help. That presumably implies that they were reasonably well off.

Yes, he is the sixth or seventh son and three have died. (They had twins earlier and the record is torn / unreadable). That's really helpful. Thanks very much.  :)

The Common Room / Baptism record query

Hello. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but it's not a problem with reading the record.

This is a record from 1718. "Caroli" and "Rosea" (Charles and Rose) are my 6xgreat grand parents. What I wanted to know is what the "3=6" means. As you can see, the entries above have different pairs of numbers here. There is nothing at the top of the column to give any indication.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: Ellen from Pwllheli area

Thank you everybody, and I do apologise for the delay in replying. (For some reason, I didn't get any notifications on this topic. Since I was trying to sort out something urgent, I'd left this until I thought someone had replied...)

1880's & probably mid-late decade.
Although her left hand is prominent I don't detect
a wedding ring.
That date might fit in with her being my nain's aunt who died unmarried in 1890 (born 1860).

This is a photo of a carte de visite from a collection of family photos. As you can see, someone has labelled it "Auntie Ellen". However, like in lots of families, names are reused and there are several possibilities for who it could be. Could you help me with a date please.
Also if someone could get rid of the name label, that would be fantastic.
Thanks very much
