Family History Beginners Board / Re: family search website - reliable?

And on FS (at least when it was the IGI) there are two types of record - extracted records which have been taken from a parish record, census return or some other original record. And submitted records which have been contributed by users.
These submitted records may be accurate, but may contain assumptions, such as age of bride and groom on marriage (I have seen some - pre 1837 -, where groom is always 25 and bride is always 21). Sometimes a baptism record and a death record have been linked together as one record. They could be correct, but it would be rare for the actual  baptism record to be annotated with date of death or burial, unless events were very close to each other.
And  on the subject of other people's assumptions. Look carefully at any BMD certificates people have attached to their trees, whether it be FS, Ancestry or any other tree hosting platform. I have seen some where the tree owner has written assumed information on the copy of the Certificate they have bought, then uploaded it to their tree. An E and W (post 1837) marriage Cert will have names of fathers of the couple and their occupations, It will not have the fathers' date and place of birth as I saw on one cert a while back, which led another descendent of the couple on a time consuming wild goose chase.

Ohh yes I think this is the problem. People are uploading documents to people and then they're seen as official source?

My family all have a really common Christian names and surnames which is leading to someone finding "john Smith A" and thinking its "John Smith B".

The value of FamilySearch isn't the trees, it's the huge number of records, especially for the United States.

Exactly! There are are a huge number of records to be found via a search of the catalogue. I am amazed by how few people, including Rootschatters, seem to use this.

I can't see the documents,  I'm from Ireland, I've been using find my past since ancestry was doing my mind in with wildly wrong info on trees being posted as hints. Find my past is easier to navigate however, same issues with the trees. The issue is I've a large amount of family with the same names down the lines or as others with the same surnames, I know myself they're wrong because I know the parish and that the family for farmers so for example someone turns up as a weaver with the same name and living in a completely different parish (irish people just didn't move that much, especially where farming is involved) and it clashes with another record I know it's not them. I can see records on family search being assigned to two completely different people or, different generations. My family tree all seem to be related to eachother at some point which doesn't help!

Im just wondering
is family search reliable?
I can see my family on there,
but the records/family trees on family search dont make sense - ive seen it cited it everywhere though when i search.
is it a case that this website is just like ancestry where nearly everyones tree, is wrong?

Down / Re: "LINTON" FAMILY did they come from Down???
« on: Sunday 15 December 24 18:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Friends,

Can anyone please help me?

I am trying to locate a "WILLIAM LINTON" who may of originally came form Down.

His children were JOHN b c 1816, WALSH b c1818, MARY JANE b c1822 and ELIZABETH b c1829.

It said on the shipping records that WALSH LINTON came from ARMAGH, but I am unable to find any birth or any information on his father WILLIAM.

I found out through 'Irish Ancestors', that there were more LINTON'S in Down than anywhere else and since Armagh is next door to Down I thought it was worth a slim chance.

If anyone could help me find this LINTON family or give me some help in any other way, I would be very appreciative.

Kind Regards

children
from Tasmania

Hi Im very late to this, but I come from Lintons in Tullycallidy Armagh (we are still there)
I have a william linton b around 1790 who I can only find a son - william linton b.1814, this william linton married mary albin and had my gg grandfather albin but also had another son walsh b.1858.
Maybe your walsh linton is my william linton b 1814's brother?

I also have other walsh lintons on a different line. My ggg grandfather walsh linton b around 1810, married AnNE lawson and had children - Mary Jane Linton(my direct line, who married a Murray), another Walsh linton 1845 and a samuel linton.
his father was walsh linton b around late 1700s, and his mother was maybe called margaret (the only rec i can find in newspaper dying in 1840s and married to a walsh linton)
I can find one record of a child by a Walsh Linton and margaret mcardell being baptised in the early 1800s armagh Roman catholic. A walsh linton snr will in 1838 leaving his assets to walsh linton jnr, and both a walsh linton snr and jnr from armagh, in the newspapers donating towards Daniel Oconnell politics before the famine.

All these Lintons are farmers from the Tynan/ Derrynoose area of Armagh, and my family have been told have a long history there.

they leased land under Maxwell during the famine

I was once told that Charlotte married a John? Hyde, who died young and left Charlotte with a son named John, but don’t have the proof. Family search, before they changed their website named all William McCollell and Charlotte Mussen’s children , some of them being Sarah,William, Margaret and  Blaney.

Son John Hyde baptised in 30 march 1800
mother Charlotte Mussen, Father John Hyde

charlotte hyde marries John McKittrick in 1809
record says "widow" but doesnt say who this is referring to

Rebecca Mussen McKittrick bap. 1817 - to John and Charlotte mcKittrick, in drumbo..

No other children i can find.
If Rebecca is recorded with Mussen im wondering if my Blaney born around early 1810s is Charlottes son.

I believe Blaney Mussen was brother to my Charlotte born c1795. She was married to William McConnell who was a miller , near Balleny. I have never found proof of that marriage, but I am here to prove that they had children, their daughter Sarah being my gggrandmother. I just wish we could find some proof of that marriage. RosemaryJoan

Only charlotte Mussens earlier than the civil records i could find were:
Mussen Charlotte in 1799 Down
Mussen Charlotte in 1896 Antrim
Mussen Charlotte L in 1896    Antrim
Mussen Charlotte in 1902   Antrim
Mussen Charlotte in 1908   Down

Blaney got married in 1832 in Dromore - no charlotte Mussens getting married aound this time - and no female Mussens marrying a william Mcconnell around the time either. Is it possible she married a Mussen, was widowed and remarried a mcconnell - sometimes that can confuse things, for example id someone remarry but when she died her children refferred to her as her former married name for newspapers..

did find  William McConnell marrying Nancy Cunningham in Dromore 1844: both from Balleny Dromore - witness 1 John Cunningham and witness 2 Samuel Arbuthnot (Mussens married into this name) .. not fathers listed. Would be nice to know if Nancy was related to Blaneys wife charlotte.. maybe this is your connection?

I think ive found all the sons born to Philip married, was thinking that one of them - maybe Philip Skelton Mussen went by Blaney but no..

Mrg record for Blaney Mussen but no recorded details other than spouse Charlotte.

Havent found any mention in newspapers either

« on: Monday 02 December 24 14:20 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks guys! Pretty sure they're related. Can't seem to find walsh Linton snr (b around 1780s/90s) and his son walsh Linton jnr being related to this line.
Did find a walsh Linton baptising a child in armagh roman catholic in 1806.. no other baptisms recorded and all records after that in the line are protestant.

Armagh / Linton family

Need help re Lintons in tullycallidy area.
I'll label the first line A and the second B. Basically I have lintons everywhere because there is a C line too!

I have a William Linton(A) born around 1853, farmer. Parents both William Linton, a farmer(his father also William Linton farmer) and Mary Albin, she died in 1906 (reg off by granddaughter Eliza berry*) and both are on the census 1901 with their son William Linton(A)b 1850s listed as a farmer and also married but no wife present in home. All born in armagh.
Assuming with William, they also a daughter Elizabeth Linton b around 1850s and married a Berry, Eliza's birth cert confirmed mother was a Linton.

B line
Here's where I get confused. I have another William Linton also a farmer in armagh in a separate line of family born around 1850s (who's father is recorded as a William also farmer on mrg cert). HE married a jenkinson. They had A daughter christine/tinawho married a grierson (After Christine died her sister Elizabeth* married grierson, it was elizabeths first marriage. )

I can find him (b) on the census with his wife and  Tina + other children in 1901.
He says he's born in armagh too.

How likely is it that this William Linton is the same person recorded twice on the census in 1901.
I cannot find a marriage for Linton and Albins son William(A), and he says he's married on the census.
- I cannot find a death cert for a separate William Linton (A)of this dob either.
-The timeline of Eliza Berry being granddaughter to MJ Albin (A) when she died 1906 and her mother listing William Linton (A) on the marriage certificate as father, farmer, also fits if these two williams in armagh are the same people. As Linton and Jenkinsons (B) daughter Elizabeth did not marry a Berry/ was born too late to have Eliza.
- I also have a Welsh Linton (C) in armagh, early 1800s on another line! Is he connected? Because I'm seeing children being named Wesh on Linton A line too.

I originally thought that B william was maybe from Scotland because of the 2 William lintons, both farmers on the 1901 census.

A+B married into eachother, and C(but the Welsh Linton is way far back in this line)
