Thanks for the reference. I'll find Black's book. It never occurred to me that a Moncur had *married* a Huguenot and that was the start of the association. :)

Our family "lore" has it that we are of Huguenot descent. The Moncure family of Virginia was begun by John Moncure, born John Moncur, in 1710 in Scotland. He was accepted into the "Society of The Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia," which was a Huguenot group. I am still trying to confirm whether the family was in fact Huguenot, but our family has believed it to be so for generations.

Does anyone know of a list of Huguenot surnames that can be found in Scotland? Our family lore says we have a Huguenot background and I have traced a direct ancestor named Moncur, whose son John was born in either 1710 or 1711 in Scotland (two boys named John were born in those two years, to brothers Robert and William Moncur) listed in parochial registers of Kinneff and Catterline) and emigrated to Virginia in 1733. Rev. John Moncure was inducted much later into the Virginia Huguenot Society but they can't tell me why and I can't find a solid basis for the connection to French protestants. Any assistance would be welcome!
