Many thanks everyone.  From further research into this side of my family it seems there was money, none of which passed down to me sadly!

Many thanks for your help.  I was not aware of the Women's Property Act 1870 so this of course makes complete sense in why these trust arrangements were set up.  I'm learning every day!  Thank you.

Hi, I have a copy of a will dated 1838 for James Grimwood,Farmer, Hatfield Peverel, Essex.  The will is easy enough to read but I just don't understand it.  My descendent is his daughter Lydia who is mentioned a number of times but what she was bequethed is a bit of a mystery to me. Her brother James, was the eldest son and was bequethed the farm which is not unexpected.  From what I can make out James Snr was a wealthy man when he died, Lydia and her sisters were bequethed money but for some of them it didn't seem to be that straightforward.  Is there anyone that can help me understand?  The will is 3 pages and these are attached, although it looks as though you need to right click on the images and open as new tabs to see the whole pages.
Many thanks for all your help.

Thank you so much for your reply. I have contacted the friends of the cemetery as you suggested and I’ll wait to see what they say. I have another ancestor buried at Camberwell
Old Cemetery so I could make a day of it!
Thanks again

Many thanks everyone for your very helpful replies. As suggested I will follow up with the Friends of Norwood Cemetery.  I wasn't aware of Billiongraves so I shall check that out as well.  Also, I didn't know that you could make a request via Find a Grave so that is another avenue for me.
I could make a day out to Norwood Cemetery but I'd rather be sure that the grave exists before I do no.
Thanks again.

Hi, Does anyone know if the MI's for Norwood have been transcribed and of so where I can get hold of them?  I have an ancestor Merena Grace Fido who was buried there in 1933.   I have looked on deceased on-line so I know she was buried there but I'd like to be able see the actual MI.
Many thanks

Hi Daisypetal

Oh dear, the plot thickens.  Please can you tell me, if you have it, the year or date of this admission to Long Grove Asylum.  Also, please would you mind telling me how you came across this information as I suspect there are websites that I currently don't have access to which I should consider.

I don't live too far from the Surrey Archive Centre at Woking so I think I may make a trip there.
Many thanks

I'm not sure whether to be pleased or not because this is definitely my Maria Hardy.  Her mother's maiden name was Wiltshire so any doubt I had due to the different YOB has been cleared.  I'm sure many of us would be happy to take a few years off if we thought we could get away with it!

I have looked at the digital birth certificate for the baby John Andrew and his father is stated as Joseph so all is correct.  I didn't know anything about this baby and it's sad he died so soon after he was born.

As I said before it's no wonder that it was all a big secret but isn't it great that some super sleuth genealogists can uncover it in a matter of days.

I still need to find Maria's death so I shall concentrate on that. I can't believe I would ever have got this far without you all.

This is fascinating research and I am so grateful. If this is my Maria Hardy it puts into context why her son Samuel didn’t want to talk about her. The only thing that niggles is that I have her birth certificate and she was born in 1861 not 1864. That’s not to say it’s not her but it leaves me with a small element of doubt. I suspect the Maria Hardy in the article and this info about the workhouse and the mental health hospital are the same person but are they ‘my’ Maria Hardy who officially was 3 years older??
Re the newspaper article how could I find out whether she was sentenced for the crime and if so what punishment she received.
As I said I am so grateful to you all , I clearly have a long way to go with developing my expertise.
