Good find GR2, perhaps what it has been transcribed incorrectly an what they are saying is the Walter is the son of Walter Joass, the elder. It would make sense however I have not checked to see if there is a Walter Joass that is the elder (father).

Thank you GR2, some interesting and relevant items in the annals. Appreciate you posting them.

The links for the annals worked for me using Safari.

Thank you Annie, the witnesses always make for interesting research linking the families and connections. Below the baptism of Thomas Joass it looks like below William Joss of Coleonard? and ? Ogilvie were the witness to John and William Lovie. One would expect they live in close proximity to the Joass' or have a family connection.

Hello Alan, my line is from James Joass 1820-1884 who married Elizabeth Duff (1821-1889), they had four children, one being James Duff Joass (1842-1922).  JDJ went on to marry Elizabeth Melmeth (1848-1906) in Australia. He and the family then migrated to New Zealand with the exception of Eliza Ann Joass (1865-1938) who was the only child married at the time. She married John Smith (1855-1934) and they are my great grandparents.

We don't seem to be a DNA match using your kit number in gedmatch or on Ancestry. My thinking is that our match is below the threshold and therefore is not reported as a match.

It would be good to see your tree on Ancestry in order to check some of the common ground but also, perhaps solve some of the mysteries of our common ancestors.

Cheers.

Craig

GR2, the information about James not being lawful son but natural son helps immensely. Appreciate everyone's input on this.

My line is from Alexander (1722-1802) and Helen Ross (1745-), Walter Joss (1780-1862) and Ann Mackay (1784-1854).

Thanks Alan, I could not find any marriage record for Janet Hird. I wasn't sure if John Joass (1770-1849) was the same John that married Janet McCombie. I didn't find any children to Janet McCombie and with Janet Hird and John having James Joass (1800) which is thought to be James Alexander Joass, master mariner who went to New Zealand. So was looking for information that might confirm all of the above.

Thanks Graham

Thank Trish, I will check out FreeReg. One site that I have not seen.

Also thanks Anne but the older posts are not really directed at Janet Hird and John and more Alexander and Walter Joass, unless I missed it.
