Thanks, yes I have found William on the census records. My great great grandmother Elizabeth was sometimes known as both Pennock and Starling. I'm currently trying to unravel it all as William had another wife who died quite young.

Hi. I realise this is a very old post now but my great great grandmother Elizabeth Starling is listed on the 1881 census as a kitchenmaid at the Buck Inn in Guisborough. At the time, the Buck was run by Henry Watson and wife Esther. Elizabeth married my great great grandfather Thomas Henry Grainge in 1884 and they lived in Stokesley. Have you come across Elizabeth in your research? I know it's a long shot but always worth asking.

Thanks for the tip. I will look at the Leeds Intelligencer for further info. Much appreciated.

That's great Val. Thanks for your help. During my research on ancestry.com I have found prison records for a Francis Swales. In 1858 he is imprisoned in York for aiding a Margaret Stephenson to commit bigamy. Have you any knowledge of this and could it be Elizabeth Stephensons Francis? Also in 1848 a 33 year old Francis Swales, a sedgefield potter, is sentenced to 2 months in Durham gaol for an assault. Worse still, a Francis Swales appears in York in 1851 charged with bestiality. There are no further details attached to these records and I'm hoping 1851s Francis is unrelated.

There seems to be a lot of Elizabeths, Francis and Christianas in both the Swales and Stephenson families. Unpicking it all is going to be interesting.

Hello, I realise this is an old thread, but thought it might be worth a stab. I have recently started researching my family history through the Stokesley Grainge family. It appears that I descend from Elizabeth Stephenson and Francis Swales through thier daughter Christiana (Swales) Grainge. I have Elizabeth as born in Yarm 1813, and Francis as born in Aycliffe 1814. Does anyone have any further information on Elizabeth, Francis or Christiana? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
