Family History Beginners Board / Re: Unknown Surname

The address was a house converted to flats in Petersham, Sydney I lived in the top flat, his
friends lived  down stairs, it was thru them i met John, after the baby was born I left but returned a few months later to collect mail, John was there again(the same time of year). I didn't vote till I was in my late thirties, nothing was digitized back then, you only got caught if the Electoral Officer came knocking on your door.  Some of the men in the photo were recognized because they were locals, some of the names were wrong but no one offered up a surname for John,

Thank you, I know that John was not a local, I believe he probably worked for one of the contracting companies there. I briefly met him again at the same address one year later, he had a nurse of his daughter but didn't seem very interested.  I have put the photo on the Face Book site 'ex Mt isan's from the 70's catch up page' some of the men have been identified.  I have tried every thing I can think of, also paid $4000,00 to a detective agency,  Without a surname or a DNA hit I don't think we will ever find this man.

I had a short romance with a man in Sydney in 1971 from which my daughter was born.  This man named John left Sydney  to work in Mt Isa, I received a letter and photo several months later, sadly I destroyed the letter, before I thought to write his surname on the back of the photo as his surname I was unable to pronounce. I have placed the photo on the Mt Isa Face Book page several times, there are several men sitting at the table in the photo and two have been identified.   My daughter has done a DNA test and discovered her grandfather is an American Marine who was in Queensland in the mid 1940s, he returned home possibly not knowing he had a child here.  It has been suggested John ? may have been adopted.  I hope I am not wasting your time.

I would like to ask for help researching my sister-in-laws grandmother.  Una was born Mudgee NSW
1897 and Married Bertrand Gawthorne in Chartswood Sydney in 1915 they had three children, Nancy 1915-1916 Dael 1918-2002 and Lyell 1921-1987. Lyell is my sister-in - laws father.  Una left her husband and lived with a man named Roy Harold Collins together they had two children Ruth who recently passed away and her son who is 93 years old.  Roy died in 1967 and Una died in 1960.  their two children were in Burnside Chidrens home for sometime then taken by their father and raised by him.  Una's son  is quite angry with regard to his mother and I am hoping there is more information out there about Una that I am unable to find that will give her son an insight into his mothers life after Roy Collins.
Thank you

Family History Beginners Board / Betty Baxter
« on: Wednesday 20 September 23 00:11 BST (UK)  »
Betty was born c1929 in Sydney, her mother was Rita Baxter nee Croker and father Roy Baxter.  Divorce proceedings were started in 1929. Roy denied Betty was his daughter but the daughter of the co-respondent William Robert Swindail, the spelling of his surname on the divorce documents given as Swindo and corrected to Swindale.
Roy died in 1952, Betty is included on his death certificate as one of his children, she was then aged 25 years.
The Baxter/Croker families lived in the inner Sydney suburbs of Balmain/Glebe/Leichhardt/Newton.  With that in mind I searched BDM and found a Betty Baxter marry Kenneth Frederick Julius in 1952 in  Newtown.
Betty and Kenneth appear on the Electoral Roll in Gilpin St Annandale in 1954 - 1958 then in 1968 Betty is not on the Electoral at that address only Kenneth and his mother Stella.  I have searched for Betty for such a long time without success.

Thank you so much Debra, I think you have 'Cracked The Case'  Living at 10 Booth Street Balmain was Alice's' sister Charlotte Vaughan and her husband Edward Powell, Charlotte 'Carrie' Died from stomach cancer in 1937 which is probably why  Alice and Arthur moved out.  All that needs to happen now  is to prove which member of the family Doreen belongs to as Carrie and Arthur were childless.

I sincerely want to thank you and all the members of Rootschat for their support and information given to me these last few weeks.
Kind regards
Sonya

Thank you for the information. I live in a small country town on the NSW - Victorian  border so it looks like 'back to the drawing board' for me.
