Thank you very much! I am now not sure about who this is as I don't have a relative who served with the Royal Artillery (at least not that I have found yet). I wonder if I might ask another question? I have a great relation who was a first or second lieutenant in the Scots Rifles. Were they linked or associated with the Royal Artillery?

Hello,
I have a photo that I think is an ancestor of mine and have been trying to identify the uniform he is wearing. I would be grateful for any help. I think it is WW1 but apologise if not!
Thank you,
Aileen

Hi,

The photo is a family group (attached) and sadly will probably not provide much more information (although I would be happy to be wrong) even though it is a postcard. The photographer was my great-grandfather who was a photographer and produced the postcard!

The lady standing next to James is his sister (My great-grandmother), the older gentleman sitting is her father-in-law (also a photographer), the two young boys are her sons, the younger, blond one is my grandpa (who also became a photographer) and we are not sure who the older lady is.

It's at times like this you wish there were names on the back or a message giving you a clue!

Hello . . and thanks again for your input. I will definitely get in touch with Stow Pipe band and see if they have any records that may help.

My other slight problem with this is that he was indeed in Stow in 1871 and 1881 but so far I haven't been able to locate him in 1891 or 1901. He moved south and was in Witley, Surrey in 1911. He was a gamekeeper and I know that other male members of his family went back to Kingussie area as gamekeepers for a while, so he may have been there . . . and maybe a piper there too? Lots to investigate.

Thanks again,
Aileen

Thank you all for your input - as I said I was not sure he had been in the military but you have helped clarify that for me. I didn't have enough knowledge of insignia, belts, shoes etc to make any kind of educated guess. His name was James McLean Born 1865 in Stow (classed as Midlothian then but now Scottish Borders).

Any suggestions as to where I might direct my search now?

Many thanks again,
Aileen

Hello. I have a family photograph of a very distinguished looking member of my family, taken we think about 1903. He is in full kilted regalia which looks like it may be military, although to be fair I am not very sure so apologies if it is not! I have tried to zoom into the badge of his cap but can't get a clear look. There has also been a suggestion that he may have been in a regimental pipe band? I would be very grateful for any help with this.
Many thanks,
Aileen

Hello all,

Thank you so much for this information, it's wonderful. What a lovely obituary too, it definitely gives a clear picture of Thomas. I am also so pleased to know where he is buried. I attach a portrait of him in later life.

Many, many thanks,
Aileen

Hello Lodger,

Thank you for looking - it was a long shot.

Rosie - thank you for your suggestion, I have started searching for funeral and obituaries now. He was named in a history of Covington and Thankerton Vol 2 (by William Fleming) as a notable in the area:

Thomas Hutchison (c1839-1916) was a farmer in Tinto View in 1901 (census). He had previously been anagricultural labourer in Cormiston and Coulter. His son Thomas was a merchant in Thankerton

This makes me more confident that there will be something somewhere about him (and his son) - just need to find it!

Best wishes,
Aileen
