Cumberland / Re: 1841 Census

The column for born outside England (if you are looking at the English 1841 census) refers to where they were born, not their nationality. The only choices were S for Scotland, I for Ireland, W for Wales or F for foreign parts.

So for people born in the Isle of Man, only F would fit as the Isle of Man was not a part of England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland. And I have in fact seen someone born in the Isle of Man referred to as born in Foreign parts, on a 1841 Census of Cumberland. He was a MITCHINSON.

And I am very pleased to have followed Forfarian's advice. The rescan was emailed to me this morning, and look at the difference in legibility!

Great customer service from ScotlandsPeople, too.

I have got confirmation! In the 1871 census, the bride is living as servant at Carseminnoch, and her parents in one of the Carseminnoch Cottages.

Always nice to corroborate your information!

Presumably yes - thank you!

Thanks for trying! But I am pretty confident now that Carseminnoch is correct.

Brilliant list!

I think the first one is Carseminnoch - although in the register with a k at the end. And the second is the same!

Thanks for the tip - I did not know you could ask them to do that.

However, if the quality of the ink is so poor, I doubt there is much they can do to produce a more legible image.

I have downloaded a marriage register image from ScotlandsPeople for a marriage in 1873 in Minnigaff Parish. The ink has deteriorated very badly, and while I can work out the remainder of the entry, there are two place names that defy me.

The first one is the place where the marriage took place - after the printed "at" and before Minnigaff in the next line.

The second one is the abode of the bride - again I can read Minnigaff but not the word before it.

Apologies for the small pictures - I tried to use a bigger one but it breached the 500 KB limit.

Any help from people with local knowledge much appreciated!

Petra
