« on: Friday 22 August 14 12:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
I haven't been on Rootschat in ages!
I also have a gt grandfather who came from St Vincent,
John Robert Jordan, b.  abt 1853 in  St. Vincent, West Indies
He was in Dunedin, NZ in 1878, where he married Catherine Young, who had come from Scotland.
He died in  04 Sept 1921 in Dunedin, New Zealand. His occupation is listed as: Baker or groom.
I'd appreciate  help with this.
Thanks so much

Kent Lookup Requests / What became of Sarah Kennard of Tenterden, c1840s
« on: Friday 21 June 13 12:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
My  3 great grandparents were  Thomas Kennard and his wife, Sarah Blanch
Thomas Kennard, was born at Brenchley in 1785 and died at Tenterden in 1861
Sarah Blanch, was born at Rolvenden in 1789, and died at Tenterden in 1860

They had a number of children:
- William b. 1813      - emigrated to NSW 1838, to NZ, 1840 d.1875.
-  Thomas  b. 1816    - emigrated to NSW 1838 - ?
-  Robert  b.1818    -   d. London 1893
-  George  b. 1820  - emigrated to NSW 1838; died NSW 1899
-  Sarah  b.  21 Oct .1824    ----

I have been trying to work out what became of their youngest child, their daughter  Sarah.
She was dedicated at the Holy Lane Baptist Chapel, Tenterden,  19 Dec 1824.
For the 1841 Census, the family were at Parke Gate, Tenterden listed as KENWARD
-  Thomas KENWARD    plus, his wife   Sarah and children,  Robert  and Sarah

No children were listed with the parents in the 1851 census!

That is all that I have on Sarah  Kennard!
I have tried a few possible marriage index entries, but have been unsuccessful.
The parents were buried from St Mildreds. But I couldn't find her in their marriage index.
When they got old they were assisted by Sarah Blanch's niece, Charlotte Verrell
[Charlotte was married at St Mildred's].
I have just read (in another post) that there was a Presbyterian church in Tenterden.

Could someone possibly look and she if she is listed in that in the 1840s
Any other suggestions of where to look for her would be appreciated!
I have wondered if she moved to the city, or possibly emigrated.
Thus far I haven't seen any sign of her.
This is one of my mysteries

Thanks in anticipation

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Anyone recognise this gentleman?
« on: Saturday 22 May 10 07:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I would say it was Walter Nash.
During WWII he spent quite abit of time as our ambassador in the US.
We were training our air force in Canada for the RAF in Europe.
It's possible the photo might have been taken overseas

I have seen photos  of Sid Holland & it isn't him!!
Cheers

Hi
I have just seen this
Jack Kennard was my grand-uncle John Edwin Kennard.
Sybil was his 3rd wife
They were living in Oamaru.
I think married in the late 1960s.
Uncle died in 1973
I am now inputting the entire Kennard family tree on ancestry.com

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: Kennards of Aldershot
« on: Sunday 05 July 09 08:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi Wendy
Yes, it does look like the 1901 census for our Eliza.
Also, thank you so much for the FreeBDM link for Robert Kennard.
I'll check it out.

I have been blown away by the speed of Computer searching.
I have yet to sort out a research strategy of what is searched electronically,
and when you need to revert manual searching to verify information.
Would you believe 2 weeks ago I was unaware of this line.
I am absolutely amazed!  :)
Robert Kennard, and his younger sister Sarah remained in England when the 3 elder brothers emigrated to Australia, (& my ancestor William, then  to N.Z.)
I think I found Sarah last night, but I have yet to verify my hunch.
Thank you so much for your help.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Kennards of Aldershot
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 04:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am new on this board. I hope I am in the right place!
I have been on Ancestry and have found my gt grandfather's younger brother
Robert Kennard b. Rolvenden, Kent, c1821,
his wife,    Martha Curteis b. c1825 Biddenden, Kent,  and family living at Aldershot.

I can't find the Robert in the Census of 1901. I suspect he may have died.
But  I dont seem to be finding the reference! Any suggestions  where I might go looking?
They are listed with the Royal Engineers for a number of censuses .
If I was to go looking for an LDS church register for a burial, which church might it be?
The wife's death ref I have found, hopefully they will be buried together.

Also,  the 1891 Census is listing
Robert Kennard   70    Head   widower Plumber
Eliza Kennard       38    daughter   single
Robert Walter         9    grandson
On Ancestry, on the connection from Robert, his mother is listed as Eliza.
But I think I read on the original  the name looks like  Robert Nutter,
who I suspect was the eldest son of the other dau., Maria & George Nutter.
I was confused! Has anyone else had this happen!

On the 1881 Census we had met a George Nutter, & he eventually married the other daughter, Maria. I have found the rest of this large family in the 1891 census, also in Aldershot.

Sussex / Re: Baker family - Salehurst / Ewhurst, Sussex
« on: Tuesday 25 September 07 11:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi there Chris in 1066
These dates have all been a little baffling,  it makes more sense now.

However, the Salehurst  parish register is still has a problem. It has:
Jan 1673
Feb 1673
March 1673
March 1674
That was all very logical, but is followed by:
April 1674
May 1675
   & continues ...
Where the rest of 1674 is, I have no idea!
Unfortunately, the baptism I am looking for was supposed to be May 1674.
I have looked backwards, and forwards, all to no avail!
... I guess these things happen.

Do you, or someone, happen to know the URL for the website that has archival information about Settlements cases? I am wondering if the mysterious baptismal date was quoted by Thomas Baker's son, William Baker at his Settlement  hearing at Salehurst in May 1770.

Thank you very much for your assistance,
BerylM

Hi Andrea
Thanks.
The dates, plus the old writing, and the Latin make this era a challege!
We  were discussing this up at the centre  yesterday morning.
In this register then beginning of the year usually Jan & Feb continue with the dates of the previous year, and the dates seemed to change about March.
I have looked all around and can't seem to find this particular baptism.
Cheers

Hi
I have found in the Parish Chest records of the "Overseers of the Poor of the Parrish of Ewhurst"
that in 1770 my ancestor William Baker was Examined and carried to Sailhurst [Salehurst] with an order, I presume to establish where he had a settlement.

From my researches it appears that William Baker was born in Ewhurst, bap. 17 May 1713.
His mother had been supported by the parish of Ewhurst for years because she was widowed.
His father Thomas Baker and his mother Jane (Rogers) - known as the widdow Baker, had come from Salehurst. I presume that is why he was being taken back there.

Were these examinations before a court, and would there be any records?.
If so, where would I find them?
Or, would this be in the Overseers settlement papers, or Overseers rates for Salehurst.
What sort of information do these give?. Do  they include birth dates etc.

I am having problems with a birth date for his father,  Thomas Baker
 - there is a much quoted  date:  bap 24 May 1674 at Salehurst! (bur 20 Nov 1720 Ewhurst)
Unfortunately, the microfilm I have been searching has a gap in the register at this point.
At the bottom of the page is "April:74". then at the top of the next page is: "May 1675".
I am not sure where this date has come from!

Any suggestions
Cheers
BerylM
