World War One / Re: DID MY GRANDFATHER SERVE IN WW1

Of course!  My mother's birth certificate.  Idiot me never thought of that.

He was an Engineer (fitter) in September 1917, as shown on her  birth certificate.  So no services record.  I assume his was a "reserved occupation".  It was, after all, essential to keep the gas supply going in London.

Thanks all.

Mabel Victoria was my late mother and the son born in 1919 was Victor John (Bob).  I know he served in the REME during WW2.  Haven't yet managed to find his army record either, but that's another issue.  There were 9 children (I think) Mabel and Victor were the 7th and 8th.

Their mother was Henrietta Matilda Price (1881-1967).

That William J C King could be my grandfather.  The only other person I have come across with those initials was his son - too young to serve in the 1st War, born in 1902.

I was too young, when my grandfather, WJC King, died, to ask him about his experience in WW1.  He was born in 1880, so would have been of an age to serve in the armed forces but there has never been a mention of his service.  He was a fitter working for a gas company in the early years of the 20th Century, so he may have been in a reserved occupation and have no war record.

Is there anywhere I can find out if he did serve or not?

Wiltshire / Re: John PRICE'S two wives
« on: Monday 23 June 25 12:00 BST (UK)  »
Thanks all.  I have it now.

John Price (my 2X gr grandfather) was a mason born in 1810 (or possibly 08 and baptised in 1810).  He married Elizabeth Sly in 1832 and my gr grandfather Francis (Frank) was born in 1833.  He was a "Master Bricklayer" - never heard of that before.  The family lived at 34 Brook Street, Warminster.

The other John Price was a labourer, born(?) in 1811.  He married Elizabeth Dodimead in 1833 and they had Virtue Price .  That family lived at 16 Brook Street, Warminster.

I am assuming that both Johns are related in some way, but haven't found a common ancestor for them.  I will look into that in future.

Correction:  Margaret de Cave 1567-1615.  Sorry.

My Brill line goes back to William Brill born in Weston Turville in 1823.  He went to London and married Mary Ann Williams in 1848 at Newington.

His line goes back to George Brill and Elizabeth Goodson in 1730 - also Weston Turville.

Elizabeth's line goes back to William Goodson (1624-1673) and Sarah Smythe (b 1525) in Dorset. Married Aston Clinton 1624.

Sarah's father was Henry Smyth jnr (1585-1647) - his wife could be one of 2 or 3 people, still trying to find that.

Henry's father was Henry Smyth (1560-1610).  Here we run into the first problem.  Smyth is such a common name and I don't have a birthplace for him.  He could be the son of Lord Robert Smyth (1544-1601), but he (Lord R) was born in Yorkshire and died in Oxfordshire.  I can't find another potential father for Henry.

The 2nd problem:  Henry is said to have married Margaret Cecil de Cave (1567-1715) who was the daughter of Elizabeth de Cecil (1523-1569) and Francis de Cave (1524-1583) who came from Stanford, Northamptonshire,  and died at Hungerton, Leics.

I don't know how to get any further with these Smyths.  Henry could either be the son of Lord Robert, or a yeoman, son of another Smyth altogether.  If he is not the son of a lord, would Margaret de Cecil, grandaughter of Lord Burleigh, be allowed to marry him?  It seems unlikely.

So these Smyths are my brick wall and I have no idea how to get through it.  Any suggestions?

Wiltshire / John PRICE'S two wives
« on: Friday 20 June 25 20:01 BST (UK)  »
My 2x gr grandfather, John Price (1810-1901) lived in Warminster.  He married Elizabeth Sly 22 July 1832.  He also married Elizabeth Dodimead in July 1833.  His son, Francis was born in 02 March 1833 (almost 9 months after the Sly/Price marriage).  I had assumed that our line was, therefore, descended from the Sly family of Warminster.

However, Eliza Dodimead invaded my family tree (appeared out of the blue on my Ancestry and then my FindMyPast trees).  I ignored her - she could not be my ancestor.  I have only today found the marriage dates of the two ladies.  Still - she shouldn't be my 3x gr grandmother.

Ancestry DNA, though, gives me a match to Dodimead.  So, surely she must be my ancestor.  Unless, unless, the two Elizabeths were related (both born in 1810 in Warminster, both married at St Denis, Warminster).

I can't find a death for Eliz. Sly but am assuming that she did die in March 1833, or soon thereafter, leaving John free to marry Eliz Dodimead.

I can only investigate remotely from the Hebrides so, could anyone suggest a resource that I might use to dig deeper into this story - and to find out if I do have Sly ancestors as well as Dodimead?
