Buckinghamshire / WHO WERE THESE SMYTHS?
« on: Friday 20 June 25 20:39 BST (UK)  »
My Brill line goes back to William Brill born in Weston Turville in 1823.  He went to London and married Mary Ann Williams in 1848 at Newington.

His line goes back to George Brill and Elizabeth Goodson in 1730 - also Weston Turville.

Elizabeth's line goes back to William Goodson (1624-1673) and Sarah Smythe (b 1525) in Dorset. Married Aston Clinton 1624.

Sarah's father was Henry Smyth jnr (1585-1647) - his wife could be one of 2 or 3 people, still trying to find that.

Henry's father was Henry Smyth (1560-1610).  Here we run into the first problem.  Smyth is such a common name and I don't have a birthplace for him.  He could be the son of Lord Robert Smyth (1544-1601), but he (Lord R) was born in Yorkshire and died in Oxfordshire.  I can't find another potential father for Henry.

The 2nd problem:  Henry is said to have married Margaret Cecil de Cave (1567-1715) who was the daughter of Elizabeth de Cecil (1523-1569) and Francis de Cave (1524-1583) who came from Stanford, Northamptonshire,  and died at Hungerton, Leics.

I don't know how to get any further with these Smyths.  Henry could either be the son of Lord Robert, or a yeoman, son of another Smyth altogether.  If he is not the son of a lord, would Margaret de Cecil, grandaughter of Lord Burleigh, be allowed to marry him?  It seems unlikely.

So these Smyths are my brick wall and I have no idea how to get through it.  Any suggestions?

Wiltshire / JOHN PRICE'S TWO WIVES
« on: Friday 20 June 25 20:01 BST (UK)  »
My 2x gr grandfather, John Price (1810-1901) lived in Warminster.  He married Elizabeth Sly 22 July 1832.  He also married Elizabeth Dodimead in July 1833.  His son, Francis was born in 02 March 1833 (almost 9 months after the Sly/Price marriage).  I had assumed that our line was, therefore, descended from the Sly family of Warminster.

However, Eliza Dodimead invaded my family tree (appeared out of the blue on my Ancestry and then my FindMyPast trees).  I ignored her - she could not be my ancestor.  I have only today found the marriage dates of the two ladies.  Still - she shouldn't be my 3x gr grandmother.

Ancestry DNA, though, gives me a match to Dodimead.  So, surely she must be my ancestor.  Unless, unless, the two Elizabeths were related (both born in 1810 in Warminster, both married at St Denis, Warminster).

I can't find a death for Eliz. Sly but am assuming that she did die in March 1833, or soon thereafter, leaving John free to marry Eliz Dodimead.

I can only investigate remotely from the Hebrides so, could anyone suggest a resource that I might use to dig deeper into this story - and to find out if I do have Sly ancestors as well as Dodimead?

FindMyPast offers 9 children for Elizabeth Goodson and George Brill.  They have Jane born in 1730 - possible but very soon after their marriage and a son Thomas who appears to have been born in 1754 - also unlikely but possible.  It would mean that Elizabeth was having children for 24 years - again not impossible.  I have found these family history sites to be quite unreliable and offering various alternative bits of information.

I don't really believe in the Cecil connection at all, although it would be nice, but while the Goodsons were  said to be "husbandmen" and the Brills "yeoman", I don't think they were of high enough status to be so related - not unless they came down in the world during the civil war.

A distant cousin told me of the will of George Brill some years ago but I didn't have a copy.  I have just ordered one.  There may be helpful information there about the 18th century family.

Yes - my mistake.  It wasn't Free BMD.  Not sure now where it came from - it was years ago that I found William's death but never his birth record.

My father was Henry George Brill born 1915 in Lambeth, London.  His great grandfather was William Brill born 1823 in Weston Turville, Bucks.  I have William's death certificate, but not his birth certificate.

From him from Free BMD I have his line back to George Brill in Weston Turville (1711-1800).  I don't have evidence of his marriage to Elizabeth Goodson in Weston Turville but the family appear to have been Quakers and living in the house, now called Bryalls in W Turville, used as a meeting house for local Quakers.  I did see mentions of the family in an online record of Quakers in the village.

From there, I only have family history site recommendations back from Elizabeth Goodson to William Goodson 1625-1723, married to Sarah Smythe born 1625 in Aston Clinton 1654.  Sarah appears to have been the daughter of Henry Smyth jnr from Cheddington, Bucks 1586-1647.

I have tried to get help from the Buckinghamshire FHS, but never received a reply from them.

Family Search has my ancestor descended from one Henry Smyth 1560-1610 married to Margaret Cecil 1542-1611.  Margaret was sister of William Cecil, Lord Burleigh.

Find My Past has my ancestor descended from Henry Smyth 1560-1610 married to Margaret de Cave 1562-?., granddaughter of William Cecil, Lord Burleigh. This Henry was beheaded at the Tower in 1610

My line goes from Brill, via Goodson to Sarah Smyth 1625-?, to Henry Smyth jnr (wife maybe Alice ? or Frances Sanford) then Henry Smyth.

Does anyone have any advice on how to find out which is the right one?

I'm not able to get to the Mainland to access any archives myself.
