Scotland / Re: Glasgow Burial Records?

The Old Rose Garden Lair Records are held by Glasgow City Archives at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow
(around 1882 Glasgow Council, in widening Rutherglen Road gained control of the Burial ground and many of the deceased were re interred in the Southern Necropolis)

see https://newcleckitdominie.wordpress.com/2022/12/24/the-gorbals-burying-ground/  for more information on the Burial ground

Very interesting read thank you! It seems all (or an attempt at most) of the bodies were reinterred at the southern necropolis. Perhaps unmarked for many. I guess even if I can’t find a record, they’re probably at the southern necropolis now.

Southern Necropolis on FamilySearch (free, need to be logged in)
https://www.familysearch.org/en/search/catalog/1322281

You can browse the films via the camera icon, or search them via the full text icon.

Earliest register from 1840-1843
How well does the full text facility read the entries? Judge for yourself here

It may not be a straightforward search!

Thank you! I was able to find the record for one of the others on the death certificate (there are 3 as you probably know). However I couldn’t find my ancestor. Upon closer inspection there is a distinction - this person has “Southern Necropolis”, mine specifically has “Gorbals Cemetery”. I thought these were the same thing. Do you know where to access the Gorbals Cemetery records specifically? For context this record is from April of 1859.

How old?

1850’s - 1900 I have quite a few. I know one was buried there for sure it’s listed on their death cert, the others died in Gorbals so I’m assuming they were buried there as well. Would like to look up records online if possible

Scotland / Glasgow Burial Records?

Hi I’m wondering who to contact to retrieve old burial records for Glasgow? Specifically the Southern Necropolis in Gorbals. Thanks!

If they were travelling people, maybe they just fancied a change of scene?

True, just seems like it would have been an expense to head out there, and then 1 month later they’re back in Glasgow. Seems a bit out of the way is all but you never know. They certainly weren’t tied down anywhere so why not?

Sea travel was much easier than land travel because the roads were pretty bad - it was quite normal to travel from Aberdeen or Edinburgh by sea, for example - but Ireland to Glasgow via Islay seems rather a convoluted way to go, surely?

I agree! Haha just trying to think of why they were there. Very out of the way compared to where the rest of the family usually traveled. I guess it’ll remain a mystery. Thank you for the reply!

Scotland / Bowmore Islay

Does anybody know anything about the island of Islay in the 1850’s. I have some itinerant ancestors who had a child here in 1851 and I’m just trying to figure out why in the world they were there. Every other record has them between Glasgow and Edinburgh, Aberdeen…etc. Islay just seems so remote for a group of itinerant tinkers to be trekking out to. My first thought was my 4x great granduncle’s (who’s the head of the family in question) wife was from Ireland. Maybe they were visiting? Was Bowmore a common port of departure when trying to reach Ireland in the 1850’s? About 1 month later they’re in Glasgow for the 1851 census so they most likely were returning if that was the reason. Anyway just trying to see what others might think. Thank you!

Scotland / Re: Best place to search records?

Planning a trip to Scotland in the near future. The Scotland’s People Center is at the top of my list of places to stop, but are there any other places worth visiting? I’ll be in Edinburgh, will there be anything different at the Edinburgh Archives that would be worth stopping by? I was also planning on visiting the west Lothian local history museum, though not sure what they have as far as viewable records. Thanks!
Yes, both of these have information not held by Scotland's People.

There are other resources in Edinburgh
National Records of Scotland https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/
National Library of Scotland https://www.nls.uk/
Scottish Genealogy Society https://www.scotsgenealogy.com/
Edinburgh Central Library https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/directory-record/1229174/central-library
University of Edinburgh Archives https://archives.collections.ed.ac.uk/

and a variety of others

Whether they are worth you visiting depends on what you are researching.

In general it's a bad idea to turn up at an archive or family history centre without having some idea what you want to look at. Before you leave home, have a really good rake through all their online catalogues, make a note of anything specific you want to look at, then get in touch to book an appointment and tell them exactly what documents you want to see so that they can have them ready and waiting for you.

Note that you can no longer go and look at the Edinburgh burial registers. Enquiries about burials in council-managed cemeteries in Edinburgh have to be submitted by e-mail.

Thanks so much for the thorough reply! Very helpful I appreciate it
