Ah, I must admit I'd not thought of that - thanks Millipede!

Thank you so much ciderdrinker! That's super helpful - more detail on some of those baptisms than I'd found (esp James's occupation), and I'd not found that death record for him. I'd erroneously - though tentatively - come to the view that he was in the 1841 census but now a bricklayer (which felt unlikely tbh).

I guess Caroline might well have had to go into service after her dad died, or to live with relatives. Like you say, the wedding is still a mystery too.

Thanks so much, amondg! I think those are her parents, and I'd found some of those baptisms but (crucially) not Edward's, which fits the 1841 record perfectly.

I'd found two others likely to be theirs:
* William, bapt 21 Jan 1810 in Holborn, parents James Holloway and Mary
* William Henry, b 1821, bapt 19 Aug 1821, d 26 Aug 1824, Southwark; James Holloway & Mary Ann (living at Great Suffolk Street)

Thanks again!

Andy

That's them - I'd seen the record but lost the significance of it pinning down her birthplace: thanks Ashtone!

He was a skin collector and his son became a butcher. A Mr W T Thurkle was advertising himself as the cheapest supplier of horseflesh for human consumption as late as the 1950s!

Thanks again,

Andy

William Thurkle (b 1813; https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Thurkle-46) fathered several children whose birth registrations all name "Caroline Thurkle formerly Holloway" as mother. They were born in Southwark from 1839-1861 (though I think Caroline may have been born in Middlesex: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Holloway-6122). I cannot find any record that might refer to their marriage on FindMyPast, Ancestry, FamilySearch, FreeReg or GRO, even allowing variant spelling and different first names or surnames (so, e.g., no sign Caroline had married previously). It's possible from the 1841 census record (where her age is given as 20) that she might have needed a licence to marry, but I've not managed to find that either. Any tips or suggestions of what I might look for and where?

Tyrone / Re: James PURVIS of Tyrone 1720-1801

It's possible I've been researching a descendant branch. My 3xg grandfather, James Purvis (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Purvis-2300), was born in Ireland in 1828 and moved to Cumberland, England where he'd married a local girl by 1851, before moving to Hexham, Northumberland, where he died in 1866. The UK census only gives his pob as Ireland, and I think his marriage was a 'border marriage' (so no paperwork), so I don't know where in Ireland he came from. His children's names make clear he was Protestant, and Co Tyrone had the biggest Purvis concentration. I've not managed to make any headway with Irish records, but have had a 23andme DNA test and am thinking of getting the Ancestry test too. Do you have anything about your James's descendants?

Cheers,

Andy

Hi Michael,
May be too late to be of use to you, but I'm a descendant of Jonathan and Hannah and have put together profiles (with sources) for them on Wikitree: Jonathan is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dawson-6453 and Hannah is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sumpton-9. Hopefully there might be some info that's still new to you - and please let me know if you've got stuff about them that's not present.
Cheers,
Andy

Durham Lookup Requests / Re: cannot find on 1911 census

(Recognising this is probably too late to be useful...) He was my paternal grandfather, and there's a detailed, referenced profile for him at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Purvis-2239
