Wexford / Re: George Audley born approx 1761 in New Ross
« on: Sunday 04 August 24 12:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi Wexflyer,

Why a long shot; well because I thought that it is unlikely that I would find George's baptism, but at least I have got to try.

Whilst I have some uncertainty as to George's year of birth I think it is most likely to be 1761/62 and therefore just before the records of New Ross exist. The best hope would be   I could find the  baptism of what one could one or more of George's siblings and so assume his parentage.

I know there are other people with the Audley surname at "The Rower" and "Inistioge" in County Kilkenny 5 miles and 10 miles away from New Ross so I have a concern that perhaps he was baptised away from New Ross and the Admiralty Records just state New Ross as that was the nearest large town.

In the  Gibraltar inhabitants list of 1834 George is recorded as Protestant and I believe that  the members of the Audley family in the Rower and Inistioge were  originally C of I. Unfortunately the last person in "The Rower" with the Audley surname past away in 2018. We used to exchange Christmas Cards as we both have the same surname but could never find a common ancestor.

I just found this reference to George Audley in the admiralty records, whilst looking for something else and was hoping I could fit it  into the Audley Family of "The Rower"

I live in England so visiting places within Ireland is not really an option, so any advice as to how to track down the baptism of George Audley would be appreciated.

Wexford / George Audley born approx 1761 in New Ross

I know that this is a long shot but I would appreciate any help if that is possible.

I have a George Audley who according to "Admiralty" records at the National Archives at Kew in London was born in New Ross. He was probably born about 1761/62 based on 2 references to his age. A third record suggests he was born  later in 1769/70.

George Audley served in the Royal Navy and spent some time in Gibraltar.
He  has a son (Thomas) baptised in Gibraltar in 1814, and George was still in Gibraltar 1834.  The Gibraltar records indicate that in  1834 he was a Widower and a Protestant.
I believe he returned to England in about 1836.
I believe his service in the Royal Navy for 15 years 5 months from 1797 to 1812 ( but there is some uncertainty in this)
He became a Greenwich Pensioner (I believe around 1832) and died on  or about  16th December 1840 at Greenwich , England according to Admiralty Records.
Can anybody help me find the baptism  record of this George Audley and the names of his parents.
Thanks in anticipation of any help
Regards

Hi Jebber & ciderdrinker.

Thanks for your replies to my original message

I have now found the records that ciderdrinker refers to on the FindMyPast website. It could well be the George Audley I am after.
But a couple of questions Where does Wrexham come from I cannot find it in the records?
I have found that a George Audley was buried on 18th December 1840 at Greenwich aged 78 which suggests he was born 1761/2.

I am still trying to identify what and where Rockingham House is. Could it be in Greenwich?

Jabber
I agree with everything you say my concern is would a Navy man have his wife aboard ship for the child to have been born and baptised in Gibraltar?

Hi ciderdrinker,
That may not be the George Audley I am after, but what you say is extremely helpful.

You say that George Audley was born in New Ross near Wrexham I would suspect that the record might say New Ross, Wexford, Ireland.  I know that there is a New Ross in Wexford Ireland and there was  an Audley Family that was very near New Ross in Ireland. I cannot find a New Ross near Wrexham, Wales.
Would it be possible to advise me of  your source of the Greenwich Pensioner information, so that I can take a look at the document. I assume it is on a subscription website.

I had assumed that the George  Audley was army as in the baptism record it says that he was of Barrack department. I assume Barracks are more army than Navy. Also the witness/  godfather was Lt Cambrick. I interpret the Lt as Lieutenant which I believe is an army rank and not a Navy rank.

Many thanks for your help and if possible could you please let me know the source of the Greenwich Pensioner information so I can take a look at it.

Armed Forces / Regiments in Gibraltar 1814 & 1815

Hi All,
How do I find out what regiments were in Gibraltar in 1814/1815?

I have the baptism of a Thomas Audley the son of a George Audley who was baptised 22nd January 1815 (born 31st December 1814)

The record states George Audley was of "Barrack Department" and a witness/godfather was "Lt. Cambrick", hence I suspect he was army rather than Navy.

Ideas of what regiments wrer in  Gibraltar at that time, whould help me identify where George Audley originated. Unfortunately I do not know the mother's name.

Thanks in ancicipation of any help
