Mayo / Re: Inconsistency in birth date, baptism and civil registration Ryan

I have similar set of inconsistencies:
One great great uncle who was baptised on 29th May 1881 according to the church records, in the civil record his birth date is given as 12th Nov 1882 and it was registered on 12th Nov 1883.
One of his brothers has a similar set of dates: baptism 1st Jun 1877, civil birth date 6th Jun 1878, registered 7th Aug 1878

Further to the George Thomas Herron who was killed at the Somme in July 1916, his nephew George Timothy Herron (father Thomas Herron) was killed in action in May 1918 and is commemorated at the Soissons Memorial in France.
George Thomas's name appears on the Ashington Memorial and George Timothy's name appears on the Stakeford Memorial (previously listed on the website as CT Herron)

Hi,
Just found this thread, like many one of my antecedents hails from Norfolk.
Sometime in the mid 1850's Timothy Hurn (Herron/Harn/Hearne) left Sustead, Norfolk with wife Maria and 5 children with another child George Timothy born in the north east in 1856. So Timothy left the life of an agricultural labourer to become a miner. Sadly Timothy was killed in a mine accident at Hartley Colliery in 1860, not the disaster of 1862, where due to a miscommunication, he fell out of the cage and fell to his death at the bottom of the shaft.
It looks like his wife Maria received some pension following Timothy's death as in the 1871 census she is listed as being an 'annuitant' - someone in receipt of a 'private income;.
Different branches of the family have taken the surname as Harn, Herron and Hurn which are obviously Northumberland interpretations of the Norfolk accent as spoken to the invigilators filling out the census forms over the years (the 1871 census could have Maria as 'Neron' but I think that is just our Mormon friends reading of the text (some readings DO leave a bit believing)!

For those who are interested here's a couple of pictures of the Thiepval Memorial in France and the section of the wall with George Thomas Herron memorialised. There are over 72,000 names displayed on the memorial of soldiers who died but have no known grave.

Staffordshire / Re: Looking for Information on a Robert Oxberry (Oxburry) from 1757

Hi Roger,
Thanks for the infomation.
We have Robert Oxberry (Oxburry) marrying Elizabeth Dobson in Dec of 1782 at Jarrow, so it is possible he moved up here following the death of his mother.
Robert is my wife Carol's 3xGt Grandfather through his son James and his second marriage.
We have come across the 'Hawkesberry' surname in connection with the second marriage of Robert's son James so we are wondering is it the way a clerk is writing down the name they hear. We have that issue with my 3xGt Grandfather Timothy Hurn who hailed from Norfolk, we have variants of Hurn, Herne, Hearne, Herron. So how would a north east clerk interpret a Norfolk accent.
Thanks

Hi Trish/Maddy,

Thanks once again for having a look for us.

The MC says Thomas Holliday was a husbandsman so looking after animals.
Elizabeth was living at Great Broughton and William at Flimby at the time of the marriage. Witnesses are a Sarah Walker and can't decipher the other one, scan attached.
Trying to check Elizabeth's age we have 40 in 1850, 42 in 1851, 50 in 1861, 57 in 1871, 69 in 1881, 80 in 1891 and 85 at time of death in 1897 so the birth year ranges from 1809 to 1814 but assuming the earlier dates are more correct we're looking at 1809-1811.

If the mother IS Jane Reed then that wipes out the Arthuret baptism of 1811

Do you know if the Carlisle record office have the St Mary, Holm Cultram records? One reason is there are more antecedents on both sides of the family from Cumberland so it would make a trip across worthwhile.

I had followed one Thomas Holliday who married a Catherine Tunstall in 1868 but realised I was following the wrong one as Elizabeth's Thomas was still with her and single on the 1871 census (DOH!)
Cheers

Thanks Maddy.
The only other bit of information we have is a baptism of a Betty Holliday, daughter of Thomas Holliday and Sarah Scott. As yet still to find further information hence the request.

Detail Source
Name:   Betty Holliday
Gender:   Female
Baptism Date:   10 Mar 1811
Baptism Place:   Arthuret, Cumberland, England
Father:
Thomas Holliday
Mother:
Sarah Scott
FHL Film Number:   1471997

As for her son Thomas we have a record for him being born on the Wigton Workhouse on 20th Feb 1845 but I can't remember where that record came from. His baptism one says 26th Feb 1845, mother Betty Holliday. We have him with her in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses. The idea of the workhouse sounds right.

Cheers
Paul

Hi,
Looking for information regarding an Elizabeth Holliday, spinster, who married a widower, William Bethwaite of Dalston on 28 Sept 1850 aged 40, at Cockermouth Registry Office. Her father is named on the marriage certificate as Thomas Holliday.
1851 and 1861 censuses show her birthplace as Holm Cultram, 1871 to 1891 say Abbey Holm(e).
!851 census following the marriage shows William's children from an earlier marriage and a son to Elizabeth called Thomas aged 6.

We had most of the northeast info, the hard part is deciding who’s who in Staffs. Looks like we need to make journey to see the records.
Thanks once again
