Antony I have a copy of the transcript which is on the Online Lancashire Parish Church Project and the grooms fathers name is John also. The source of the information is said to be the register: marriages 1896-1906 Page 63 Entry 126, on microfilm at Manchester Central Library. Do you think that an error could have been made when transferring information to microfilm from a written church register? I'm sorry if I sound green, but I really am not used to this depth of delving!

I must say I'm not as perplexed as I was, now that I've read a few of the above comments!

Thanks everyone  :)

Enter a wrong forename for a grooms or brides father on a marriage certificate??

Or has anyone ever heard of "John" being a shortened name/nickname for "Joseph"??

I would appreciate any advice/pointers

Its a bit of a diversion from the thread but thanks so much to Ray T for posting those maps of the  relevant area in Manchester in 1849 and 1889, which are fascinating! Great stuff  ;)

US Lookup Requests / Re: Walter W Davies (1833-1906)

Oh please...... you expect an Englishman to understand how to pronounce Welsh place names!  ;D Not a chance!! Its bad enough trying to untangle people with the surname Davies! I thought Greenhalgh in Lancashire was bad  ::) I suppose it could be worse, I'm thinking Jones would be on a different level in Wales lol!!

The joys of ancestry

He looks to be the brother of my gg grandfather Jacob, also a son of John Davies (Brickmaker) and Mary, abode Acrefair, who was baptised 2/8/1829 Ruabon Parish Records.

Thank you Gadget!
