The name looks like Jessie and in those days it was quite common to 'recycle' a name if the first child with that name had died.

I came across this years ago when doing research for my late partner's family where one little girl Margaret had died, and several years later another daughter got the name Margaret.

South Africa / Anglican Parish registers burial Grahamstown

Is there anyone who might be able to find this on Ancestry maybe?

I'm looking for a burial record for William Hansell Hewitt, who was born on 5th April 1922 in Cape Town and buried on 7th February 1989 in Grahamstown.

His funeral service took place in the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. George and therefore I assume that he was also buried there.

This is exactly what would have been in the files from the University of Witwatersrand for 1868-1997, but that file has no link on their website although they do list it.
ZA HPRA AB3208-GRA-4.30.12
Title
GRA Grahamstown St. Michael/St. George Burials
Date(s)
1868 - 1997

This would be very helpful

Going to the Archives is easier said than done. I was there 2 weeks ago and they are very strict on how many and what documents they allow to be copied (shame as they have a wealth of information of historical value and what is the point if people aren't allowed to have it)?

Even if they allow you to place an order, it will take at least 15 working days before they action it after you have paid.

So, it's not a case of quickly go and get :(

You're very welcome and yes, sadly that happens.

I visited the site where family members lived in Montreal a century ago in 2004, and it's now a bank :(

Thank you treespirit, I thought the same but felt it could be worth checking with someone on the ground.

I suppose the only way to find out is to contact the church directly and see what they can tell me.

Many thanks

Thank you Queenie,

It looks like that is the one I'm looking for.

I'll see if I can get a copy of it and take it from there.

Thank you so much, it's a great help.

Paula

Thank you for the reply. I had hoped that the church records would yield something or otherwise maybe obituaries in the newspaper. It would have been a news-worthy story, a young mother, wife of a reverend and only married a few years.

I'll keep searching, thank you.
