London and Middlesex / Re: The location of Cumberland Street In Shoreditch
« on: Sunday 04 August 24 06:03 BST (UK)  »
Aha!

No worries,

I think I have just found it on an 1868 map.
It is here on the map just off Curtain Road, north of "Chartered Gas Works" and near to St James's Church:
https://london1868.com/weller32b.htm

Thanks.  :) ;)

Thanks for the map! Just found out my 3x Great Grandmother was born at 19 Cumberland Street in 1837. Always wondered why she was listed as being born in 'St James, Middlesex' in the censuses. Must have been the church across the road where whe was baptised. :)

Yes. On Ancestry (at least), the manifest wasn't indexed, so a search for Minero or the passenger names came up empty.

On Trove, there are snippets of when the Minero left London and when it arrived in Australia. I've attached the top of page 1 of the Minero's manifest.

Cheers,
Rob.

You are right. On several Australian certs she is listed as Louisa Stemp.

We think this is the same Louisa in the 1881 England census...14 years old now compared to 4 years old in 1871:

Name:   Louisa Stamp
Age:   14
Estimated Birth Year:   abt 1867
Relationship to Head:   Servant
Gender:   Female
Where born:   Middlesex, England
Civil Parish:   St Pancras
County/Island:   London
Country:   England
Street Address:   48 Hampden St
Education:
Employment status:
.
Occupation:   Servant
Registration District:   Pancras
Sub registration district:   Somers Town
ED, institution, or vessel:   12b
Neighbors:   View others on page
Piece:   202
Folio:   76
Page Number:   32
Household Members:
Name   Age
James Stone   36
Harriett Stone   36
Willie Stone   11
Minnie Stone   3
Reginald Stone   1
Louisa Stamp   14

Working as a 14 year old servant for the Stone family in St Pancras, London. We couldn't find any death or marriage records for this Louisa, and she doesn't show up in any other England censuses. So we're going with this one :) 3 years after this census, age 17, she hopped a ship to Australia for a new life. It would be really nice to know for sure though. :)

Thank you very much for your input!

Cheers,
Rob.

I can't view the Ancestry record.  Is it the same as this one?

1871 Living at Caledonian Crescent, St James Clerkenwell, Holborn, London & Middlesex

Samuel and Louise Nash with children Ellen J, Henry S, Herbert, Louisa and William W.  All children born in Middlesex.

Registration district Holborn
Piece number 391
Folio 8
Page 10

There is a marriage in MQ 1876 Pancras 1b 127 of a John Edmund Stamp to a Louisa Nash.

However further investigation shows it can't be this family as the Louisa born in 1868 is still there in the 1891 census.

Perhaps you can give me details of the 1871 census so that I can find the one you have. Head of household's name, birth year and place of birth should do.

Here's the info from the 1871 census:

Name:   Louisa Stamp
Age:   4
Estimated Birth Year:   1867
Relation:   Daughter
Gender:   Female
Where born:   London, Middlesex, England
Civil parish:   St Andrew Holborn
Ecclesiastical parish:   St John The Evangelist
County/Island:   London
Country:   England
Registration district:   Holborn
Sub-registration district:   St George the Martyr
ED, institution, or vessel:   9
Household schedule number:   197
Piece:   372
Folio:   19
Page number:   31
Household Members (Name)   Age   Relationship
Sarah Stamp
37   Wife
Thomas Stamp
6   Son
Louisa Stamp   4   Daughter

Apologies for the formatting, I just copy/pasted it from Ancestry. Strangely there was no Head of house listed, only Sarah the wife.

Cheers,
Rob.

Your image is from Ancestry Western Australia Passengers

....Minero.....1884.....

open any name....go to page 44 of 90.

Can you please list all the information on the  the marriage certificate

STAMP Catherine  marr.   WILLIAMS   John Anthony   @   Northampton

year of marriage  1884   year of registration 1886    # 6427

Was the marriage registered late?   Why?

Added...no, that is Catherine, not your Louisa....but interesting to see another STAMP in WA.

When and where did your Louisa marry...to whom?

Hi Wivenhoe :)

Louisa had 4 children here in Australia with John Carter, who was born in New South Wales around 1852. They were never married because he was still married to a Sarah Saxby in NSW, whom he also had 4 children with and he subsequently abandoned all of them.

Louisa and John's children were named John Thomas, Frances Lewis Louisa, Nora Minnie and Edward John Carter.

Cheers,
Rob.

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

Can you tell us a bit more about Louisa?  Do you know when and where she was born?

I cannot find any Louisa Stamp travelling to Australia from the UK in 1884.  She was presumably a married woman at the time, do you know her husband's name or the names of any of her children?

The ship name Minero does not appear, the closest is Minerva.  Is the ship name correct?

Hi Girl Guide :)

Yes, the Minero left London 08 Apr 1884 and arrived Fremantle 01 Jul 1884. Louisa was single at the time, emigrating to Australia through a Crown Agent called Felgate & Co. I've been trying to find any Felgate records that might still exist, but no luck so far. We have plenty of records of her once she arrived in Australia, but nothing conclusive on the UK end. She was born in London sometime between 1861 and 1869, according to her Australian children's birth certs. We believe this is her entry in the 1871 England census:

Why do our ancestors like to hide themselves from us?  :D

Cheers,
Rob.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Catherine Ringrose?

Hi everyone :)

I'm trying to decipher the surname of the second passenger on this ship's manifest (below Louisa Stamp). The newspaper of the day printed her name as Catherine Ringrose, but I can't seem to find any mention of this name in the Western Australian records after arriving on this ship (the Minero) from London in 1884.

For the record, Louisa Stamp was my 2x G Grandmother, but I'm trying to research her shipmates in an effort to find out more about her.

Cheers,
Rob.

Doesn't help with finding her in London, but I assume this is Louisa's death notice 18 Sept 1916 at Subiaco?
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/26991682

and funeral notice, with details of children
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/26991797

Hi Maddy :)

Yes, these are her notices. The 'Mrs Alfred Western' referred to is actually her daughter Frances, who married Alfred Western. Funny how married women were referred to by their husband's name.

Trove is such a great resource for researchers :)

Cheers,
Rob.

That is a sad story, though it sounds like a happier ending.

Whilst I agree that the passenger list doesn't really look like RINGROSE, having a look on FreeBMD there are a couple of Catherine RINGROSE (one born Coventry 1853, the other Caistor 1849). I can't see any other name on FreeBMD searching with RING* that looks better in the time frame. You could try putting a clip of the passenger list on the handwriting decipher board. Clever people there may have some better guesses.

Thanks Maddy, I'll give that a shot  :)

Cheers,
Rob.
