The Common Room / Re: Saqui & Lawrence Jewellers
« on: Saturday 10 January 26 18:14 GMT (UK)  »
Would anyone happen to know anything about Saqui and Lawrence.

I know there was a branch in London in the 1930s, but that's about it.  Who were the Saqui and the Lawrence?

There is a Horatio Saqui on the 1901 census, listed as jeweller but I assume, even if he is connected, the partnership came later.

Any history on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tracy

Hi Tracy, I only recently started looking at this kind of thing. I was intrigued by your searches on Saqui and Lawrence as I was toled that the Lawrence was my grand father but my father last saw him when he was three, apparently he is buried in Delhi. My grand mother divorced him and married someone called Johnson who I never met, she had three sons by Lawrence the oldest, Victor my uncle is still alive and has two children.

Your Grandmother is my Grand Aunt Mabel Minnie Maud (Haider).

There was a bit of a scandal surrounding this divorce (search BMD)… she is alleged to have had an affair with her nephew who she may have married as he was a dentist and they appear on later census together

Minnie’s sister Isabel ALice is my Grandmother so we share a Great Grandfather Charles Francis Xaver Newzel Haider (also a jeweller in Hatton garden).

Minnie’s husband Lawrence Lawrence changed his name from Samuel (they later sold their business to H Samuel)

All a bit tricky to unpick!

I’m desperate for any photos of Minnie or Charles her father

I have done a significant amount of research since I first commented.
I have a lot of information and have a well documented tree and DNA matches from this branch of my family.

Mabel was my Grandmother's sister who married Lawrence Samuel (Lawrence) from Saqui and Lawrence had a scandalous divorce.
They had 3 boys; Lawrence, Harold and Stuart

I am in contact with many of the descendants of the 3 boys and would really love to get in touch with anyone else who is researching Mabel's family (Haiders).

Mabel's Father Franz and Uncle Max came to the UK in 1860-1870 from Austria and were in the Jewellery business - with two locations in Hatton Gardens.

If Tangent who commented above in this thread ever returns to the topic please do get in touch with me - I also live in Exeter and we must be related if you are descended from Mabel and Lawerence.

Hello SM Ross
I am DNA matched with Simonetta and would also like to confirm my Thomas Richardson (and George), and I also have a couple of 'Grice' in my DNA matches which indicates the 3 of us are indeed connected.

Hi (again) Linda Simonetta

I have had another bash at identifying the correct Thomas Richardson
I went through all the Census records I have on my Ancestry and note that on two of them he is staying at Smedley's Hydro at the time of the census - the 1891 census alone (as a traveller in his Fine Art business) and secondly in 1901 with his wife and two of his daughters.

Interestingly in the 1891 census, he puts his middle name as Everett.... now having a middle name unusual as this I would have thought might help but this does not come up again anywhere that I can find - having re-searched the birth records - annoying that his Father was also Thomas and there are 4 Thomas' having sons called Thomas in the Doncaster district in 1842

However, that on his Marriage to Mary, he does say that his Father was a Farmer - which might indicate that Wroot is more likely. But also makes me wonder how a Farmers son becomes a wealthy Photographic Wholesaler then Art Dealer in London.

:)
