Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Woolaston Rector's Census of 1828
« on: Tuesday 20 August 24 21:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi - does anyone have access to this document please?  I'm looking for information on anyone in Woolaston with the surname Saunders at that time, and in particular the children of Edward and Mary Saunders, most of who would be adults by 1828.

Many thanks
Mac

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 Census - William Colver

And hello again! Apologies for picking up on this years later, but I just searched for Colvers and all your entries came up.  Also lost all my emails last year so it's possible we've been in touch before - brain like a seive!

William was my ggg grandfather.  Thomas died in 1828 in Earl Shilton, age 57.  I've not been able to identify his birth record though I suspect he was the son of William and Elizabeth (Ward) and that the death register incorrectly has him as dying in 1784 (the record is confused somehow and relates to another Thomas who may actually have been called William - never untangled it).

Mary is in the 1841 census with her son Edward: 1841 census: Chapel Row, Earl Shilton
Age 65-69, with son Edward (20-25), Occupation: Seamstress

There are death and burial records for her in 1842, age 68.  I've never found her maiden name.

Cheers
Mac

Hi Inchworm.

I -think- this would have to be Joseph the husband of Sally Clarke - the only Joseph I have who was both alive and of a suitable age to be transported.  Can't be certain though.  There were also a number of Colvers in Yorkshire at the time of course, though I don't have names.

And I'm descended from Joseph's brother William (1811).  Their parents were Thomas and Mary, and I have a fair amount of detail on all of their Colver descendants, but have never managed to pin down Thomas's parents.

Contact me of you want any more info.

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Parish Records Earl Shilton - Colver
« on: Monday 08 November 10 23:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi - my notes have Ann as the daughter of Richard and Sarah but the only source for this is Phil Cover, a contact I've made in my research.  I have details on Richard's family going back a few generations which you can find here: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mactabby&id=I1394

I have also failed in the past to find any record of Ann in the census.  The Colver name is the most frequently mis-spelled in all of my tree, and thus a pain for census research!

There's no burial record for Ann, but there are 4 other Ann Colvers who were infants in the area at the time who could also potentially match the BMD record and for whom I have no other details as to whether they survived, married etc.

If you did pull the certificate it would be great to have a confirmation of what's on it.

Thanks
Mac

Hi Mike - thanks ever so much for this.  I really appreciate you giving your time for a complete stranger!

I think it's more a case of mystery deepens than mystery solved.  If the death in 1784 was of the 2 year old, then what happened to the Thomas from 1771?  Either he also died and the death isn't in the registers, or there's another William and Elizabeth, whose marriage isn't in the registers.  Looks like I'll never know...

My Thomas and Mary would have married around 1799, and given that Mary was born outside Leicestershire, I'm starting to think the marriage registration may be as well.  Nearly all of Thomas's children moved away from Earl Shilton after his death, unlike all the other Colver families who tended to stay put, so perhaps he was also out and about before getting married.

Thanks for your help anyway - it's much appreciated.

Yes, I'm hoping that, although it does seem like they'll have had to have a series of senior moments if it's all going to make sense.  After all, if the first Thomas survived, then that means two families of William and Elizabeths (or a transcription error).

Thanks again for taking the time - I really appreciate it!

Thanks for this.  The burial for Thomas son of William and Mary has always confused me.  I only have one William in Earl Shilton at that time of the right age (and I've collected as much info as I can find online about all the Colvers of Earl Shilton) and it's not likely that it's the same William because Elizabeth had a son Joseph in 1785.  It's entirely possible that there's another William knocking about, which would complicate things.

The marriage between Thomas Colver and Mary Bannister is completely new to me, but unfortunately isn't my Thomas, as his Mary was still having children in 1825!

The only solution for the two burials for Thomas son of William and Elizabeth seems to be that they both died, and only one burial got recorded.  Other than that it may have been a mistake in the mother's name, or something.  However the registers obviously contain a lot more info than the online IGI, so I'm probably missing all sorts of info.

Brilliant!  Thank you so much - never expected so much detail so quickly.  What a star!

So now I know William was an Ostler (Charlottes m.c. just says labourer) and Maria was Maria Crommarty!  Although a quick search on the IGI doesn't turn up her baptism - shame.  Still, plenty more avenues to try.

And lots of siblings all over the place - I only had Joseph and a tentative William (I knew about William snr's death and there appears to be more than a 9 month gap, so good to have the confirmation).  I also have a tentative Edward, who pops up in the 51 census in Lincolnshire, born about 1815 in Oxford - any sign of him?

Anyway, thanks again - I've been looking for this for a very long time!

Cheers
Mac
