England / Re: Was your Mum or Grandma in the Civil Service in 1940/50's?
« on: Tuesday 02 December 25 09:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I just came across this (searching for Civil Service). I've tried a Google Image search but it hasn't found any matches (don't know how good its coverage is). Sorry not to be of any help.

wow! great obit #Tikettyboo. Thanks everyone, I had first thought joiner but then realised the i was after the n, but glad you all agree that's what it is. The article confirms him as a joiner and later (in occupations I'd found him in) Auctioneer, Land and General Agent, organist and and rates collector. Just now found his gravestone too, which includes the article as well: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/198169311/william-greenwood.
Thanks everyone  :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Occupations help please

Hi, i have this 1841 census record for William Greenwood and family (of Todmorden, Yorkshire).
What I can't (and the transcriber hasn't) work out is the occupations of him and his son Thomas. Any suggestions welcome.
I've  included some rows below to help with how this person's handwriting works.
Many thanks

Thank you everyone (I've been away for a few days). Re: Elspet, a James Cowe and Margaret McIntosh were Margaret Cowe's parents, she was b. c. 1812, and (we assume) m. Peter Allan. So Elspet might be her grandmother.

Hi  William, thanks for that,
from censuses there is a Jane Allan dau. of Peter & Margaret, b. 1834. In 1851 census she was a servant. I haven't followed the children up, but I think Peter Allan (1st child that I've found) jnr died youngish (b. 1836). Jane is possibly listed as Jean Allan in the 1841 census (the transcript doesn't have the relationship to Peter & Margaret). From 1841-71 censuses I have the children as Peter, Ann, James, Jane, David, Alexander, Barbara and Elspet.

wow good find! you must  have the patience of a saint to go through these records (or a very good index ;D)
So my trying to read that entry:
July 20th ? ? - Compeared Chs. Allan in Cornhill and his wife Mary Taylor ? confessed that they had ? ? guilty of Antenuptial Fornication. They ? that they might be ? absolved. The ? agreed to their request upon them paying six shillings and eight pence ? to the ?. This they immediately complied with and they were accordingly suitably exhorted, rebuked and absolved. Closed etc.

Thank you everyone  :). I found his b. and d. last night (ok, very early this morning, you know how these rabbit holes go lol, which is why I hadn't posted them here, figured I should get some sleep!), but hadn't seen the article., thanks for that, that's lovely :).  There was another contender but the d. entry confirmed this is the right one. d. registered as being 6pm-ish on the 24th.  No profession given for his father. d. of pneumonia ([something]) 14 days, registered by son Alexander (not present)
