Hey Jasmine,

I haven’t come across any Thomas McClelland.

I’d suggest if possible to get a Y dna test done on that side of the family if you have any possible candidates. There is around 400 mcclelland testers on familytreedna who have taken tests so you’d very likely get grouped and at least know or have an idea on how to proceed with far out relations to contact etc. it would narrow it down / takes out part of the guesswork.

Hey folks, hopefully some of you will see this. Any of you have any McClellands male relatives that could take a Y dna test? I've taken one and my family are from Newry county Down where i still live today. I've traced back to the early 1800s thanks to some people here but to get beyond that> YDNA will be the biggest clue.

essentially if you test a male Y heir and they match with me then you know for certain we are related.  I did have a YDNA match with the surname McLellan and ftdna predicts we shared a common ancestor in 1760 so im just missing one or two generations.

Funny enough I was just filling in Hugh on my ancestry tree. He migrated to America and was looking to drill for oil. He ended up in New York. I found newspaper clippings supporting as such. He died in 1829

I will add in Elizabeth and Robert.

Im having some trouble. I have a DNA match who i'm struggling to see where they match in.

They are from england but their oldest known ancestor was a Patrick McClelland born 1857 who married a Catherine Garvey. They state Patrick was born on Pound Street which is in the High Street area so it does add up that they would be related somewhere.

Any idea of who John married. I cant find a record for it. I have a Margaret ann peden through ancestry but not sure if correct,

Amazing find. Thankyou again. It would seem like they are cousins. James' Father was John, Roberts's father was Robert and both likely shared the same grandfather another Robert and with ages of deaths and whatnot i should be able to align dates and research further in newspapers.

Thankyou folks. all the information posted is indeed the right family. James indeed married Catherine Costello and that marriage cert was a great help. Not only did you confirm his father being John but you confirmed he was living in Highstreet and reaffirmed that he was indeed a blacksmith which I was sure of.  My father grew up in highstreet so to know the family has had a presence around that area for much longer makes sense. I just didn't believe it because, for a generation or two, they moved into the heart of the town.

I had already come to the conclusion that John may have been his fathers name but there was two conflicting wives that where throwing me off. one with the surname Peden and the other McFarland. One thing that is intersting is whilst James McClelland is spelt as such his fathers surname is spelt McLelland. This could be a clue as a Y dna match i have spells his surname McLellan though our family diverges around the 1760s based on the calcualtions of familytreedna

Looking for information on my paternal line. Apparently, a "Jas" James McClelland owned a forge on the Mall by O'hagans Bridge in Newry. He died suddenly whilst working there in 1916. It was a Robert McClelland that owned a forge on Hill street and moved to the Mall some years prior so I assume its the same one as the address lines up. I'm trying to see if Robert was James father. I cannot find anything on Robert regarding age only that his name appears time and time again in the newspaper archives. Just not any useful information regarding birth or death.
