Travelling People / James Collins, William Rye, Caroline Buckland
« on: Tuesday 17 September 24 09:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me with the spider web of a family tree I am currently trying to figure out.

My 3 x Great Grandfather was James Collins, b.Abt1861 in Five Oak Green Kent.

As far as I can tell he married my 3 x Great Grandmother Louisa Wright on Xmas day 1884 in Benchley, Kent. His father is stated as Frederick Collins.

I believe James died in 1914 in Yalding, Kent. He was listed as an ag lab in the 1891-1911 census.

I can’t seem to find him in the 1881 census (a few years before his marriage) and in the 1871 census he is listed as living in Ticehurst, Sussex at 6 years old.

He is with a gentleman called William Kye/Rye, a travelling tinkerman and Caroline Buckland (Williams ‘Companion’) James Collins is listed as ‘adopted child’.

Strangely on the 1911 census, he has a brother Arthur Collins listed as living with him also born in Five Oak Green, he is five years younger than James.

I am trying to find out if James father was actually a Frederick Collins, who William Kye/Rye and Caroline Buckland are and if there’s anymore Collins family out there. And anything on Arthur Collins.

Interesting!

Let's look to see what we can find

Wishing us luck to find a match.

I've recently had a couple of hints via DNA matching but unsure of the significance.

I recently matched to two people who are descended from a Grace Elizabeth Frances Latour (1868-1924) she married a Thomas Walter Stanislaus Rebeiro (1852-1921) sometimes the Walter is changed to a William.

Do either of these names mean anything to you?

My Heritage is hinting that the DNA matches and my father share Great Great Grandparents, that would be John Lester Noel and Claudine Rose Latour. As Grace was born in 1868, that is before any of the Noel children were born, I'm wondering if Grace is the daughter of Claudine but possibly not John Noel.

1868 seems a little late for her to be a daughter of John Pierre Latour and Jeanne Rose, especially as I have Jeanne dying in 1831.

Interestingly one of Grace Latours children with Thomas Rebeiro is named Sylvia ROSE Rebeiro

Thanks for that. That’s certainly somewhere to start! I’d never have found that entry.

So very strange, the image i downloaded from FindMyPast a few months ago stating father is William does state he was a private in the 44th

I can't find any records for a Charlotte Nichol in India at that time.

JHN I believed stayed in India his whole life, then his son JHN (Survey of India) also did, and his son DSEN stayed in India his whole life (became an alcoholic after serving in WW2) but yet to find a death record. It was my grandfather that returned to the UK in the 1950s.

Hi, Thanks for the reply.

Indeed it does, I have John as an alternative father for John Henry. It's very hard to make any inroads with records from India. I can't seem to find anything on either John or William.

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has researched the Nichol family in India during the 1800s and early 1900s

I was especially wondering if anyone had any information or could point me in the right direction with a gentleman I believe to be my 4 x GGrandfather. William Nichol.

The only information I have is from a record of birth for his son John Henry Nichol (b.1840 Karnal, Bengal) which states JHN was baptised 24th Dec 1840 to William Nichol (Pvt 44th Regiment of Foot) and his wife Charlotte. I am struggling to find anything on William and his wife.

One thought I did have is that the 44th Regiment of Foot was involved in the First Afghan War in 1841-42, and its possible William could have been killed.

Anyone researching Nichol in India?

Donald Stewart Evans Nichol (1898 -?) (Indian Army) - Married Alice Mabel Noel (1907 - ?)
John Henry Nichol (1867 - 1928) (Survey Of India) - Married Mary Evans Judd (1870 - 1905)
John Henry Nichol (1840 - ?) - Married Catherine Margaret Spinks (1845 - 1938)
William Nichol (44th Regiment of Foot) - Married Charlotte

Me and my father have done DNA tests on Ancestry, so might help you out (or not) with the separate family theory.

I’m not sure if anyone will see this as the thread is so old but I’m also interested in the Latours of India.

Claudine Rose Latour was my 3 x Great Grandmother who married John Lester Noel that you mentioned in the initial post.

I was wondering if you’ve got any further with your research? I believe Claudines father was Jean Pierre Latour Junior who married a Jeanne Rose, and his father the senior. I’m yet to verify this though.

Thanks for all you help guys. It’s helped confirm everything for me, and even set me down a new path of research with Bacons and Hollands. For some reason I had Jane Dawson down as George Hiles mother (along with pretty much all of Ancestry) Now it all makes much more sense.
