Amazing, thank you. I'll definitely try this and see where I get to.

The moving around, and differing locations is something I struggled with too. Thank you for the advice.

The Common Room / Looking for a fresh pair of eyes

Hello fellow researchers!

I could use a fresh pair of eyes on a family tree I'm building for my partner – the Haddock family. My research has taken me from Walsall and Kidderminster all the way back through Wales and eventually to Essex and London in the 1400s.

The main point I'm struggling with is the connection to the well-known "Captain Haddocks." I've found another member's tree online that makes a direct link, but I have some doubts and want to be sure before I officially adopt that line.

Would anyone be willing to help me validate the tree I've located? Even just a quick look to see if it seems plausible.

Here is the complete, consolidated male lineage of the Haddock family based on all the images and information you have provided, presented in chronological order from the earliest known ancestor.

 * William Haddock (1400-1483), born in Leigh-on-Sea, married Mary Horden (1410-1905)*
 * Richard L Haddock Sr (1430-1483), born in Chelmsford.
 * Richard Haddock (1480-1538), born in Chelmsford, married Margaret Plomer (1490-1530).
 * Robert Haddock (1525-1571), born in Chelmsford, married Margarete Palmer (1526-1570).
 * Richard Haddock (also recorded as Captain R Haddock) (c. 1558/1559 - c. 1600/1660), with birthplaces recorded as both Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, and London, married Frances Morgan (1577-1630).
 * William Haddock II (1607-1667), born in Essex, married Mary Anne Goodlad (1602-1688).
 * Captain J Haddock (1631-1696), born in Essex, married Priscilla Martin (1651-1708).
 * William Haddock (1688-1778), born in Backbarrow, married Dorothy Marshall (1692-1756).
 * William Haddock (1727-1768), born in Aberavon, married Anne Rawlins (1729-1786).
 * Rawlins W Haddock (1754-1828), born in Aberafon, married Elizabeth Williams (1768-1827).
 * Joseph Haddock (1789-1854), born in Llangyfelach, married Mary Bennett (1789-1858).
 * Joseph Haddock (1815-1875), born in Lydbrook, married Harriet Pritchard (1818-1882).
 * Frederick W Haddock (1857-1906), born in Kidderminster, married Jane Oakes (1855-1910).
 * Joseph Haddock (1878-1948), born in Kidderminster, married Rachel E Penrice (1881-1959).
 * Abraham J Haddock (1904-1976), born in Walsall, married Margaret A Haddock (1907-1979).

*Note: The death year for Mary Horden (1905) is likely a typographical error in the source image, as it would imply a lifespan of 495 years.

I would love for someone to confirm or reassure me.

Thanks for your time!

Chris

Hi Bev, Thanks for your message. My apologies for the error with the dates in my previous post – you're right, it would definitely send you down the wrong path! Its likely because, following the initial post, we've been trying to piece things together, and we're now convinced it must have been after the 1950s–60s. The mention of Bangladesh (formed 1971) and believing that Joan went too strongly suggests a later period, specifically after Bangladesh was formed from East Pakistan. This makes us think he wasn't involved in the colonial railway works, but rather something afterwards, possibly for Bangladesh Railways (formerly East Pakistan Railways). We've learned that the country still needed British knowledge and expertise following independence, so we're wondering if that might have been his role. Thanks again for your patience as we try to figure this out! All the best, Chris

Thanks for your message! It's a known family story, so it's definitely something we've heard passed down.  I do know that Bangladesh was always referenced, which wasn't formed until 1971.  Given the timing, it would almost certainly have been after he married Joan in 1955, and likely much later, probably after Bangladesh was formed. We also believe Joan was with him. His father worked for British Railways but remained in the UK. We haven't found any travel/shipping records online either, which has been frustrating. It's possible they could have travelled via another route or way, or perhaps records from that time aren't as readily available. It's one of those family stories we're still trying to piece together!

Thanks for the information! It's definitely interesting. And it's really helpful to know he was at school in Llanidloes. This kind of detail, even if it seems like a side note, can be incredibly valuable for piecing together a bigger picture. I appreciate you sharing it!

Thanks everyone for taking an interest in my post! It's correct that George married Jean in Birkenhead, and my main focus right now is finding any photos of them. I'm also really keen to uncover details about his work on the railways in Bangladesh, specifically when and where he was employed. I know it's a big ask, but I've been searching for a long time in some obscure places and articles, so any help or pointers would be incredibly appreciated!

Shropshire / Re: Edge family of Ellesmere

I'm actively researching the Edge family for my partner, specifically focusing on the Edges connected to Bridgnorth, Wem and wider Shropshire. My main line is with Alfred Edge (1866-1936) of Bridgnorth, who married Matilda Brown. Your Edge's may be connected to the Bridgnorth Edges. If you have any interest in this line, I have a good deal of research already compiled that I'd be happy to share. Photos, biographical information, news articles etc.
