Death of Margaret Dowling aged 33 March qtr 1886 Monmouth.  Buried 13.2.1886 St Mary's Monmouth

Birth of Mary Ann Dowling Dec qtr 1873 Monmouth - no mmn - illegitimate

Amazing! thanks so much Carole, I think you may have finally solved it! no wonder I couldn't find her birth certificate under Dowling. I wonder what happened for there to be such a mix up?  Out of curiosity, in a family tree do I use Bessie Dowling (what she is on most documents) or Bessie Williams, which actually appears to be her real maiden name?

Wrong birth - mmn was Sullivan & links to a marriage between John Dowling & Catherine Sullivan

Thank you for the help Carole, much appreciated.

Do you think this may be her
Mar 1876
DOWLING    Elizabeth Catherine        Newport, M.    11a   222

I'll look into this one, the year would be out slightly but I guess that's a possibility given how unreliable some info given back then could be. Thank you

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some help with researching my 2 x great grandmother (again) with some slightly updated info.

I've been stuck on this one for months and still no breakthrough. Here's what I have

Name is Bessie Jenkins née Dowling, birth year is estimated to be 1878. She married Albert Edward Jenkins in 1899 and her marriage certificate states her father was Thomas Dowling.

I have found her on the 1891,1901 and 1911 census records. All state she was born in Raglan, Monmouthshire, Wales.

The 1891 census states she's living as a borderer at age 13. The following census' are her living with my 2 x great grandfather (Albert) and their family.

She died on 11 January 1918 Aged 39.

Despite all the information I do have I can't find any hint of a birth certificate anywhere, I have no idea why. There is also no trace of her being on an 1881 census from what I can see either. I'm at a loss as to why there are missing records I can't find. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi Robbie,3rd SWB was a reserve battalion as was the case with most regiment's, it never served abroad
but supplied replacements for those that did he could have possibly been with them throughout the war
which could be a reason for the lack of a card,His army number may give a clue to his enlistment dates
some folk's over on the Great war forum seem to have access to them and have helped me in the past.

Thanks Steve, I am also currently on the great war forum and some people have been very helpful on there. From what I have been told the 2 service numbers next to my great grandfathers (49044 & 49046) both got transferred to different regiments. Impossible to say for sure if thats the case with my great granfather but it's a possiblility. Thank you for the battalion info.

Hi everyone,

Just a little update. Today I visited the local archives and searched through the AVL for 1918. I found my great grandfather listed as PTE 49045 3rd SWB. I'm very happy to have found this, but even though I have his regimental number now, I still cannot find any index cards for him online. The mystery continues.

WW2?

That would be my guess too now. That Does mean it wouldn't be my ggrandfather in this picture though. Thanks for whatever you did to the picture too, it's much clearer.

The Common Room / Re: Does anyone recognise this uniform?
« on: Saturday 05 November 22 12:18 GMT (UK)  »
If this is the Ivy M Bladen born 1927 in Newport, Mon., then she would have been too young for service in most of WW2. As Ruskie observed service uniforms usually included ties, except for wear in hot climates ( India, Egypt ??).
The two collars do seem to have badges, but are they the same ?
I did wonder about Girl Guides, but they wore a broad tie, would any other girls' organization suit ?

Afterthought : Land Girls or similar ?

Yes that is the correct Ivy M Bladen. It is thought by other family members that she was part of the WLA but I haven't been able to find any concrete evidence of that. I think from the responses from everyone else regarding the clothing and as you pointed out the age thing, this is possible just a portrait with a broach on her beret, probably taken after the war.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
