Thank you Gadget - plenty of suggestions for me to follow up on.  Much appreciated.

I think my ancestor was in the Coachman's cottage which wasn't in Fortrose itself so I'll take a look tomorrow to see whether I can find the cottage via Findmypast or via the Valuation Rolls on ScotlandsPeople.

Family History Beginners Board / Searching a specific address in a Scottish Census
« on: Wednesday 18 June 25 14:08 BST (UK)  »
How do I look up a specific address in a Scottish census?

I know how to look for a specific person via scotlandspeople website but if I want to know who was living at a specific address in a certain census year, how would I go about this?

For example, I have an ancestor who worked at Flowerburn House (Parish of Rosemarkie) in 1891.  Assuming I don't know his name but know he was the coachman at this house, is there a way to search for the residents of Flowerburn and its cottages etc in the 1891 census?

Thanks,
Bella

I have a copy of a typed list of 'Army Births and Baptisms' (via findmypast) that gives me PLACE, YEAR, REGT, VOL, PAGE for someone I am researching.

Do these details correspond to the GRO 'Year, District of Birth, Vol and Page' I am asked for when I try an online search via GRO?
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

For example, I have the following details for someone I'm trying to find a birth certificate for:

White, Andrew - Birmingham - 1853 - 2nd Dgns - 231 - 103

but, if I use '1853, Birmingham, 231, 103' via the GRO online search, I don't get any results.  Is that because I'm using the incorrect GRO vol and page or because GRO doesn't have all army births online?

I've just added some of these details as best I can to the 'Order a Certificate or PDF' form for Overseas as advised on this chat and am hoping that GRO will send something that I've been unable to find online.

thanks,
Bella

Thanks to CaroleW, Jebber, MollyC and doolitte72 for the replies and the very useful information.

Apologies to any that I confused by posting about two individuals on two different fora but with essentially the same query - didn't think it through properly!

best wishes

Apologies Carole for the confusion.  Reading them back, I realise I've not been very clear!

There are two relatives, both around same age (30s) and I think it's possible that either or both could have been Conscientious Objectors (because of religious beliefs).  However one worked in Motherwell steelworks and the other was a 'Bricklayer (foreman)' when he married just before war so I also think it's possible they were exempt.

None of their children remember either of them being in the military.  The wife of one of them had kept several momentoes of her brothers' time in military so I would have expected to find something of her husband's if he'd served in the military.

I am just hoping to find out whether the reason that neither was in military was related to their faith/beliefs or to their work.

best wishes

Thanks CaroleW.  I've just been reading up on how to apply for information about his entry in 1939 National Identity Register in Scotland so will follow up on that.

Whilst it's possible that he was exempt (construction worker), it's also possible that his beliefs meant he was a Conscientious Objector but there's no-one left from that generation in my family that can tell me which it was.

[I've also posted a query in the Scotland/Lanarkshire forum about exempt occupations though that was in relation to a different person who worked in steelworks in case there is confusion if anyone reads both posts!]

thanks
Bella
