Wexford / GILBERTs of Inch by Gorey, Early 1800s
« on: Sunday 18 June 06 04:50 BST (UK)  »
Looking for contact with descendants of Stephen GILBERT & wife, Ann Jane [m-n-u], who were married before 1814, & resided in Inch by Gorey.  Son, Stephen was christened 14 Feb 1814, & dau., Sarah was christened 20 Mar 1816, both in Inch by Gorey.

Other Inch by Gorey inhabitants: Thomas Nowlan married Sarah Gilbert, 22 Mar 1834.  A young James Nowlan, son of Thomas & Sarah Nowlan, was christened on 22 Mar 1840.

My paternal G G/Fa, James F. Nowlan, emigrated from Co Wexford, sometime during the 1840s, & settled in Richmond, Henrico Co, VA, USA.  There, he met & married (1862) young Irish lass Margaret Ann Redmond, & they raised their family in the Richmond area.  James was a Stone Mason by trade, as were sons.

I am attempting to locate info to affirm that these are in my family line, from Inch by Gorey.  Anyone with the Gilberts &/or Nowlans in their "tree", or having info regarding the relationships of the above members, please, contact me & we can share information.

Surnames: Gilbert-Nowlan-Redmond-Cullen-Ryall...all from Co Wexford.  Thanks, & "happy hunting",  Bob Edmondson

Wexford / Re: Kinsella's and Cullens from Gorey, Wexford

James - - I just read your recent posting . . . "KINSELLs & CULLENs from Gorey, Wexford".  We are chasing common surnames!  Don't know if there are any connections.

You may want to read my posting [submitted tonight, 8 June] . . "REDMOND & CULLEN - Emigrated to Richmond, VA, USA ~1850". My lines from Ireland include Redmond, Cullen, Nowlan, & possibly Gilbert; plus of interest, Ryall.

An older Redmond son, Thomas, in early 1850s married Julia [m-n-u], & they were recorded in the 1860 census records for Richmond, Henrico Co, VA, USA, with kids. Thomas died before 1870, results of wounds suffered in Civil War battles.  Widow Julia (43)- a grocer, was listed in the 1870 census for the Richmond, VA area, with son Edward (17), a stone mason, & dau.s Mary (14), Susan  (9), & Maggie (5)...probably Margaret. Interestly, another person listed in Julia's household was Mary KINSELLA (16) - born on VA abt 1854.  No relationship to the head of household was recorded....she might have been a boarder, a neighbor, a domestic/servant, of maybe a relative [family member] of Julia's.  Hmm!

I do not yet know from where my Irish ancestors came, nor when.  In time, I might find information, which might be of interest for both of us.  I'll file your posting info for later reference.  Regards, Bob Edmondson

Wexford / REDMOND & CULLEN - Emigrated to Richmond, VA,USA ~1850

I am interested in finding Irish contacts & info on this REDMOND family.  In 1850 US census for Henrico Co, VA: [h] Edward(55) laborer;[w]Mary(48);Thomas(20);Bernard (18); Mary(16); Michael (14); Catherine (12); Margaret(10); Ann(7);  & Bridget(4). All were born in Ireland.

I believe that Mary is Mary Cullen Redmond, my maternal GG G/Mo, & her dau Margaret, wife of my mother's G/Fa, James F. Nowlan, another Wexford emigrant. Margaret & James met, married (1862), & raised their family in Richmond, Henrico Co, VA, USA. Mary Cullen, Margaret & Hubby James Nowlan, along with Margaret's sister, Bridget Redmond Ryall, are all buried in a Cullen family plot in the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. Also, in the same plot are graves for Edward, Bernard, Mary, & Michael Redmond, all ages fitting those members of the 1850 census Redmond family.  I found records of Thomas Redmond & wife Julia, with children, listed in the Richmond 1860 census records.  Thomas died in mid- 1860s from Civil War injuries, & is also buried in the same Hollywood cemetery, with wife Julia.

Julia (widow) & children Edward(17),Mary  (14), Susan(9), & Maggie(5) were in the 1870 census records for Richmond. Also, I found Mary Redmond running a boarding house in Richmond, with dau.s Margaret (18), & Bridget(14), plus many boarders listed in the census records.

I suspect that James Nowlan was born in Inch by Gorey, abt 1840, to parents Thomas & Sarah Nowlan. James' profession was a ‘stone mason/cutter’, as were three of his sons & Julia's son, Edward.

Anyone have these Redmonds (& Cullen) in their family lines?  I would be delighted to converse with anyone with these folks in their family lines, or their research database.
Thanks, Bob [Chatsworth, CA]

Wexford / James F. Nowlan - Ireland to USA - 1850
« on: Thursday 25 May 06 02:00 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for the family of G G/Fa James F. Nowlan, who immigrated to USA from Co Wexford in 1850.  He met & married (1862) Irish lass Margaret Ann Redmond, & they raised their family in Richmond, Henrico Co, VA, USA.  James was a stonemason by trade, as were 3 sons & other family members.

I have found a christening of James Nowlan on 5 Apr 1840, in Inch by Gorey, to parents Thomas & Sarah Nowlan.  I found a marriage for Thomas Nowlan to Sarah Gilbert, on 22 Mar 1834, in Inch by
Gorey.  I do not KNOW if these two events are connected.  Appreciate any help available.     Thanks, Bob [Chatsworth, CA]
