WOW! Just 'WOW'  ::) Guessing your Scottish genealogist has not read the books nor diary's...........nor delved into the Jaffray history.

Do forgive me, but I am an historian and a direct descendant with the complete tree/history at my disposal. Backed up by very many other historians, books, history, documents etc.

I meant to add, John Jeffray and Alison Swanstoun of Polwarth are a direct hit for me too. Guess that makes us cousins  ;). Yes, I have the whole lineage if you are still interested.

The Jeffrey's of Polwarth descend from Alexander Jaffray of Kingswells House/Estate in Aberdeenshire. Quite the interesting family. Alexander was twice burgess of Aberdeen and fought at the Battle of Dunbar. His diary has been published and is easy to find. He was also a Quaker.

Alexander Jaffray was married to a Jean Dun/e. The line goes back through Alexander Joffray and Cristen Burnet, daughter of Alexander Burnet 4th Baron & 9th Laird of Leys and Lady Janet Hamilton, passing back through King James 11, King James 1 of Scotland, etc.

I have the whole lineage back to the year oatcake if you are interested. They are my great.......grandparents.

Oh, and the last witch to be burned in Dundee was Grissel Jaffray, an affluent lady from the same family.

Hi there portybelle,

Another relation/cousin here  :) Adam Lothian & Elisabeth Grieve were apparently my father's mother's grandparents x 4 generations back according to some family trees out there. I believe Elisabeth was from Maybole, Ayrshire. Have been unable to find any evidence, therefore very curious to any new info that may arise.

I am looking for information on James Cowe and Elizabeth Aitken, their daughter Jane Renton Cowe was born in 1881 in Oldhamstocks, I have information on the Cowe side of the family but dont have much on Elizabeth Aitken, any help would be appreciated thanks Lesley

This is interesting as I know of a couple called James Watson and Jane Cowe, both born in Berwick on Tweed, who by 1881 were living at Pier End, Cellardyke, in the East Neuk of Fife, with their 6 children, including a daughter called Alice Renton Watson.

It has always amused me that this English couple moved to my home town of Cellardyke, of all places, because Watson has been the commonest name there for hundreds of years, and like this James Watson, the Cellardyke Watson men were mostly fishermen.

Not only that, but an English niece of James Watson's wife, by the name of Cowe, married one of the long-standing Cellardyke Watsons, a relative of mine called James Watson!

Harry D. Watson

Good day Harry,

Are you kindly able to shed any more light on the Watson/Cowe's of Cellardyke? I am looking for the birth certificate of Elizabeth Jane Cowe Watson who married William Hinksman Greig on 25/11/1927 in Crail. Her parents were John Watson (fisherman) & Helen Keith. John Watson was son of James Watson (fisherman) & Jane Cowe. I am aware of the Berwickshire Cowe line.

I am also drawing a blank on Helen Keith, daughter of a Robert Keith (fisherman) & Helen ??? illegible on the marriage certificate. I have the marriage cert of Helen Keith & John Watson, but unable to find any more than that.

Any clues would be most appreciated.

Regards, CatsC
