Thanks once again Kiltaglassan - I had not found John Joseph born in 1920 - probably because that year's records had not been released when I was looking. He was the first cousin of the John Joseph Hopkins born to Patrick Hopkins in 1909.

There was another Hopkins-Byrne child I'm fairly certain of even though I haven't seen the birth register entry - Martin Francis, 4 Oct 1924 - 20 Apr 1995, who emigrated to Canada (dates from https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/93259472/martin-francis-hopkins).

I've just had a revelation. Midie on the East Galway Facebook Group sent me Thomas Snr's obituary from 1920. It says he was survived by THREE sons, John, Patrick and Martin Thomas. I now believe that John was the father of another Thomas who had sons called Michael and Thomas, so that  Edward could be the son of the youngest Thomas and everything fits. Phew.

It would not be the first time that grandparents of a child claimed them as their own! The odd thing about Margaret is that her birth wasn't registered until July 1894, a month after her death  ???. It seems suspicious but it may be that she was sickly from birth and her parents were so consumed by anxiety that they simply forgot. We'll probably never know.

Then another thing struck me as odd. On her birth record, her mother's maiden name is McAlister, not Burns. This confused me a lot, especially as the townland, Anaverna, was the same and there were only 69 residents on the 1901 census, so a second William & Charlotte Logan living there seemed very unlikely.

The answer was simple, Charlotte, nee Burns, died in 1884...

Hi Kiltaglassan - thanks for the welcome  :). I'm astonished you found all those links in just a few hours! I've added most of them only recently to my tree over at A* and it's taken me several days. I was particularly pleased with myself for spotting Charlotte Logan's possible birth record as no other trees I had looked at had found it.

I've found out very little about the origins of their father, Thomas Hopkins, whose birth date (working back from census and death cert.) ranges from 1834-39. I recently found (what I believe is) his marriage record (Jane Frazer spelt Jean Frazer) in Tuam in 1855 which favours an earlier date, but his baptismal record eludes me - I've trawled the Tuam parish registry to no avail. I've recently been in touch with a descendant of a Bridget Hopkins b. 1833 in Kilkerran parish and discovered that almost no records from there are online (and may not be extant at all) so it could be that Thomas originally came from there or another parish where no records are available. Because I can't find 1830s Thomas's parents I can't identify his siblings and work out which of the many other Hopkins in and around Tuam are also part of the extended family. Which is frustrating  :-\.

I know this is a very old thread but it is puzzling me a lot and if you're still there Edward, maybe you can help? I believe my great-grandfather, Martin Thomas Hopkins was the brother of the Patrick Hopkins who married Charlotte Logan. I have some evidence that Martin Thomas was known as Thomas (there was also an older brother called Thomas who died in infancy). Martin Thomas had a son called Thomas, b. 1910 in Tuam, who was a butcher in Galway. But the only marriage I can find for this Thomas was in 1930's and I've only found one son, Martin T., born in 1930's (from other family trees on Ancestry - not verified by me). So I cannot work out where Edward's line fits into my tree.
