Hi Joan,

I had a bit of a break through on this. John Strange's five youngest siblings were, according to the IGI, all born in Aldbury, Hertfordshire. Therefore, it seems that John must share the same mother and father - they are shown as John Strange and Mary.

The next question is which Mary did father John marry? I have looked through many records from Hertfordshire and surrounding counties and have found just one reference which seems to tie up:

Edlesborough  St Mary the Virgin
From John Moore
Marriage:
1809 Nov 09 John Strange to Mary Wilkinson

John (junior) was born (in Bedfordshire) in Jun 1811 so it could fit but we cannot be sure - no real proof. There may be many other records that haven't yet been transcribed or, even, that family might have come from far afield.

Going further back I found the following:

Wing   All Saints
From: John Moore and Ed Hanson
(1546-1812)
Baptisms:
1779 Dec 19 John Strange s William Strange Mary

Again, it might fit but no real proof.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Dave.

Hi Joan,

Wondered if you had got any further with this?

I am not sure of the link between our trees. The Hertfordshire John Strange/Martha Tarbox marriage certificate I have does not have mother and father's names (it is an official copy so maybe the original has it).

But we do know that John was born (1811) in Northall, Bedfordshire, yet the only similar baptism is 1813 in Hertfordshire, where his parents appear to be shown as Strange/Fowler. Having two years between birth and baptism seems unusual.

So, I am not convinced it is the same John Strange. Maybe one day I will visit the Hertfordshire records office and get to the truth!

Regards,

Dave.

Hi all,
Lizzy (Elizabeth) Lovell married John Thomas Brooks and they are my wife's relations. We have a number of photos of them, if interested. Elizabeth died in 1963.

Hi,

My wife has a purse that was owned by Martha Strange (Tarbox). In that there is her wedding certificate. John Strange (bachelor) and Martha Tarbox (spinster) were married on Oct 20 1832 in Hertford. The witnesses were John and Clara Tarbox. None of them signed their names, just giving their mark (X). Their ages are not given and neither is their residence, profession or parental detail.

We are also lucky enough to have access to the Strange family bible. This shows the dates of birth of the children of John and Marta Strange (according to my wife's uncle, all in Berkhampstead, it would appear):

George (1 Apr 1834)
William (4 Mar 1837)
Matthew (11 Feb 1839)
Ann (30 Apr 1842)
Emma (24 Aug 1844)
James (13 Apr 1847)
Ephraim (14 Sep 1848)
Catherine (10 Oct 1851)

Now, the bible also shows the birth dates of the previous Strange generation, so this is John Strange, plus all his siblings:

John (2 Jun 1811) - note this is 1811, not 1812 as your census suggests
George (21 Mar 1813)
James (16 Apr 1819)
Thomas (28 Jul 1822)
Sarah (21 Jan 1824)
Ann (8 Jan 1827)
Charles (11 Dec ????)

I don't have firm information about John's father but it seems likely that he may also have been named John, born in 1791 (residing in Toddington according to the 1841 census). Again, this could be a red herring, as you have pointed out.

Being as John and Martha seemingly inherited the bible from John's father, there is also a record of the dates of birth of Martha Tarbox and her siblings:

George (27 Apr 1801)
Clarah (1 Sep 1803)
Matthew (13 Feb 1805)
Richard (25 Mar 1807)
Martha (26 Dec 1809)
John (10 Mar 1812)

From research carried out by my wife's uncle, it would appear that the Tarbox childrens' parents were George Tarbox and Catherine Emmerton (who were married in the year 1800 at Great Gaddesden).

I think that is probably about it. If you have any information germane to this side of the family tree and where you fit in, then do please share.

Happy hunting, Dave.

Hi, yes I will look into this and reply. Might be a day or two.

Hi jkgla,

John Strange married Martha Tarbox and I think I have their wedding certificate. Their daughter was Ann who married George Brooks. Their grandson was Jack Brooks who was my wife's grandfather.

I don't think I have much more on John Strange himself other than on Rootspoint which shows his birth in 1791.

Hope that helps.

Dave.

Hi everyone. In fact, Elizabeth Lovell is my wife's great grandmother. She was born on 6 March 1870 in Boxmoor. I have a photograph of her with her father. I think I have pictures of Harry (Henry) and Bill (William) also. We thought that the other brother emigrated to South Africa (this may be wrong) so it is interesting that he appears to have died in Canada.
Best wishes.
