I did indeed and it absolutely fits with the family at 2 Smiths Court on the 1871 census, informant Mary Smith.

Now I just need to sit down and build the tree properly with all this newly found info, thanks to everyone’s help!

And lastly for now, we have Catherine Burns marrying Ben Holland in 1904. Catherine's age fits, as does her father. The witnesses is one unknown plus Mary Holland. I have Mary Holland as a sister to Ben so that looks good.

And now we have what we think to be 'our' Mary Smith nee Burns marrying James Burns.

Mary's father is right (William (deceased) and the age is good. The witnesses don't appear to be of much help.

And Honora Byrne's...

And the first two marriage certs have arrived! Not that I have been checking the letterbox every hour for the past couple of days!

First up in Mary Burns marrying John Smith in 1864. This has both of them in the right area, at the right ages and so looks good. It has Mary's father as William Burns (labourer, deceased) and John's father as James Smith (labourer, deceased).

Secondly, I have James McAndry marrying Honora Byrne in 1879. As people have thought, this very well could be Mary Burns sister as Honora's father is listed as William Byrne (labourer, deceased).

Certainly nothing that challenges the work you have all so kindly already done  :D

Thanks for the guidance Cas

I have ordered the marriage cert for James Burns / Mary Smith in 1879.

I'm warming to the idea of this Mary being Mary Jane's mother, remarrying after the death of John Smith. My aunt, whose memory is failing called Florence Holland her mum's step sister, implying that Mary Jane re-married. I have a pretty good record of Mary Jane until her death in 1921 so she didn't remarry.

If Florence was just a cousin, where did the step-sister story come from? If, as we are now looking at, Mary SMith remarried after John Smith's death, then Catherine Burns, Florence's mother) would have been Mary Jane's step-sister.

I'm going to adjust my tree and see how it looks.

We'll see what the above marriage cert says.

Cas, thank you and agreed in the long thread. My head is spinning from all the info.

On the Hollands side of things, I’m now happy that Florence Holland is the daughter of Ben and Catherine Holland, with Catherine being the daughter of James Byrne/Burns and Mary Byrne. I’m happy this connection works because one of Florence’s brothers has my Grandmother Catherine Cain as a Godparent.

As you say, there are still some questions at the very top of this tree.

When I get the certs, I’ll post a new thread. Just to help me, was this ever the right place for this thread or should in be in another location?
