London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Coachmen - any info?
« on: Sunday 01 May 22 19:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have just found out that both of my ancestors were Coachmen.

One lived on Mount Street, and the other at Grosvenor Mews in London.

Also lead to believe that one was for a Chancellor, but haven't been able to confirm this yet.

I have put a question in to Westminster to see if they would know how to explore this subject from the Archives, to confirm this theory.

Interesting sub plot to my search for ancestors though.

That William Carter could be his father as is name was also William Carter (Coachman) the son is listed as a Groom on his wedding certificate in 1861.

Yes, not very original keep naming each subsequent son William!

William and Mary go on to have a son and name him William too (Aaaargh) B: 1862

This young man is listed in the 1871 census as living with Grandparents William Stafford.

Hmmm looks a little funny as some of the records do say William Carter !

Have a look at Mary Ann Amelia Furxe
1827 - 1889 MML1-VD5 on LDS family search see what they are thinking, may or may not help.

The Common Room / Re: What Will Happen When I Become a Death Certificate

Hi All

I wish my family had been hoarders, all of my grandparents and parents are no longer with us, my 10 year elder sister only just started getting into family history, but she knows absolutely nothing.

I have been working on our family history for years now, but only seriously recently.

Also been trying to put together a family bible, look how useful it was the other night for that Australian guy who found family in the UK, his siblings grandchild had done that book that he handed over with all the family history in it.

A few old photos, but sadly nothing written or any certificates!

Pictures with Grandad!
No name, who's grandad ?
I have put names and dates on the back of all mine, any on the computer I have also identified with name and date.

Than you for the replies

I have James Cowley Carter B: 1883 in Macclesfield, my great grandfather, his father was James Cowley 1842 Cheshire, his father was James Cowley was B: 1816 in Dublin Ireland married MAry Williams from Moneygall (Renamed OBAMA County)

It is the Carter part that I am struggling with from the marriage in 1861 in St George Hanover Sq, having 3 children William 1862, Elizabeth 1863 (Married Charles Orme) Louisa 1865 married Aaron Simpson.

Then I find them with Alice Carter Cowley 1880 (now with James) and my ggf James 1883!
It's the bit in the middle around 1871/divorce/death that I can't seem to nail down.

Thanks

Hi
I am looking to try and trace any Carter's, I understand that London was the epicentre for this name.
William Carter married Mary Stafford in 1861, his father William Carter was a coachman, his son a groom, they lived at Grosvenor Mews, which is now Bourdon Street.

After having 3 children with William, they split?

I can't seem to find out what happened between Mary and William as the next event seems to be she was with James Cowley and has 2 more children, one of which is my great grandfather James.
More of a twist is that he changes his name to Carter from Cowley and that is what my maternal side was known by ever since!

TIA
