United States of America / Re: Ebenezer Elgar
« on: Thursday 10 July 25 00:38 BST (UK)  »
Thank you!!
I think he must be Ebenezer, Edward and Francis/Frank.
Sorry to ask, but did you see anything of Archie Simmonds? I wonder if he died as he is not with Julia in 1910 and would only have been around 9.
Also, I noticed in the passenger list in 1906 he was written down as Ebenezer and Julia's grandson whereas in the 1901 census in England he was written as their adopted son, parents not known. Do you think they may have just assumed he was their grandson due to their ages - I don't think he could have been Julia's grandson from a previous marriage.
Thanks again  :)

Thank you so much, that's all very helpful!  :)
With the possible name change, is the 1907 city directory two people - Ebenezer + Edward or could it be the same person?
If they are different I am not sure who Edward could be...
Also, with ''Mrs Ebenezer Elgar'' dying in April 1888 and the letters of administration for the ''Elizabeth Elgar'' being in April 1888 too - is it possible this Elizabeth is his wife? Could Julia have also gone by Elizabeth?

Edit: Now I'm also not sure who ''Frank E Elgar'' is! But thank you so much for the information

United States of America / Ebenezer Elgar

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me find any information on Ebenezer Elgar (b. 1847, Rochford).
I have him in the 1851, 1861, 1891 and 1901 census. I think from 1871-1881 he was in the USA and married his wife, Julia, who came back with him in 1891 but I have nothing to prove this.
I know he went again in 1906 with his wife and adopted son Archie Simmonds, but I have no idea what happened to them after this.
If anyone finds a record of his marriage, his death, or anything that happened after that in America would be very helpful!
(also any information found about Archie Simmonds would be great too  :))

England / Re: Bussey Family

Hmm, it definitely looks like a double g and not a double s, but I can't see a 'Henry Bugger' anywhere else born in 1849 in Snettisham. Also, his son was an assistant pawn broker at some point aswell... so maybe it is him?
Thank you - this is the most likely option so far.  :)

Thank you very much!  :)
Sorry to ask another question, but I'm also struggling to find Henry Bussey (Francis' Father) in the 1871 census. It is a year before his marriage and he is also not living with his family.
In 1861 he is - at Malt House Yard, Lynn Road, Snettisham, Norfolk
In 1881 he is - at 11 Queens Place, Hampstead

He could be under 'Alfred Henry Bussey' as he is in a later census, but I haven't seen any other records calling him Alfred so not sure if this is his actual name or not...

Thank you for any help

Europe / Ormsby Powell Family
« on: Friday 13 June 25 17:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have not been able to find George Ormsby Powell (abt.1820-1853) before the 1851 census where he is married with children in Chipping, Wotton Under Edge, Dursley, Gloucestershire. It says he was born in Bristol, Gloucestershire but I've not found any proof of this.

I just found some birth and death records for various people in France with the names Ormsby Powell and thought this was a strange combination of names not to be related.
- Catherine Ormsby Powell born 9th Sep 1822 in Le Havre, Seine-Maritime, Upper Normandy
- Amelia Powell born 19 July 1828 in Le Havre, Sein-Maritime, Upper Normandy
Amelia Powell death 29 September 1867 in Seine-Inferieure, France
- Julia Ormsby Powell death aged 8 on the 11 July 1835 in Ingouville (born in Grasville, Lheure)
All three were the daughters of a George Ormsby Powell and Mary Trotman.

As well as this, my George Ormsby Powell had daughters called Amelia Ormsby Powell and Julia Ormsby Powell. It seems too much of a coincidence not to be connected, but I have no proof tying him to these people in France. I can't access any French records, I have just been using things off of family search, if anyone could help me that would be much appreciated!  :)

Thank you so much, that is really helpful!!
Any suggestions as to why they may have chosen to use Amelia's middle name as their surname for that particular census?  ???

England / Bussey Family
« on: Friday 13 June 25 14:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I have never been able to find my great grandfather (Francis Coe Bussey 1888-1967) on the 1891 census (I have him on all other ones), but him and his family are missing in 1891. Also, his mother and sibling are missing from the 1901 census. I was wondering if anyone could help me find them.

In 1901 they were at 24 Stanley Road in Prittlewell, Rochford, Essex (in this one his mother Amelia Ormsby Bussey (1851-1921) nee Powell and his little sister Lilian Edith Bussey (1895) are missing)
In 1911 they were at 258 High Road, Tottenham.

Thank you for any help!  :)

Added: I'm also struggling to find many of his siblings' birth records. Only 2 come up with ''Bussey'' mmn ''Powell'' - only Amelia (1874) and Lilian (1895) show up. Francis Coe Bussey has no maiden name on his birth record. On the 1911 census it says they had 14 children and 12 surviving.

Durham / Re: What happened to Thomas Samuel Cosgrove?
« on: Wednesday 31 January 24 16:52 GMT (UK)  »
Ah, thank you - I can discount that then. There must be another Thomas Cosgrove who marries a Gertrude, maybe it's because they married in Guernsey I can't find it (or they never married).
Thanks again  :)
