Hi Steve, not PDF. I don't think these files types are good for editing pics (I guess they could be good enough maybe for printing).

I've restored several (hundreds) of photos of my family from early 20th century China to early 2000s.

I recommend the scan to be:
- file type: tiff (JPEG is OK if your scanner doesn't have .tiff)
- file resolution: 600 dpi (the more the better, but not too much as 1200 dpi)
- crop: McGroger mentioned correctly that it is preferable (but not mandatory) to crop the white space from outside the picture, if you have the time. With that, you'll have a much smaller file size to transfer.
- type of scan: RGB and/or color. Even if your picture is originally black and white, please do scan in color. We can extract a whole lot of information from the channels.
- scanner settings: apart from these 3 settings mentioned above, I recommend you disable any other scanner presets such as sharpness or dust removal. That can be done by the retoucher in a more controlled fashion.

Hi Steve, I've worked a little bit on your family photo. The previous posters are right. It's an amazing photo, and interesting to wonder how each person's pose shows a little of their character.

Here's my contribution, but given the photo size and quality (digitally speaking, not aesthetically speaking), not much could be done. If you don't mind, I'd like to have a go in a completely scanned photo.
