Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Re: Baptism: Strattan Old Alyresford
« on: Saturday 25 December 10 14:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Nell,

Unfortunately, I do not hold any information on Sarah Strattan's early life as I have not been able to find a marriage certificate for her and "husband" James May so cannot know her father's name.

What I do know for sure is that James May was married to someone else in Gloucestershire when his and Sarah Strattan's first child, Mary Louisa May was born 1848 in Chiddingford, Surrey.  Subsequently other children followed Mary Louisa and I have everything I need forward from there.

Thank you for the information about the baptism you have discovered.  James May was born 1819 and I think that there is a good chance that the Sarah you have found is the right one ..... I just can't prove it.

Did you note in your look-up if James and Eliza had other children other than Sarah?

Thanks you for your help Nell and I will certainly keep to one side the information you have discovered for me.

Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.

Rose

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Re: HARRISS

Hi Hanes,

The C is for Charles which is also the name of the father.  I have not been able to, without doubt, identify the Harris/harriss family on either the 1881 or 1891.  The family has been found in 1901 residing in Chelsea under a mistranscription.  I think the family were recorded as "Herres".  Charles senior was said to be 41 (was actually 47) born Bethnal Green, occupation groom domestic.

In the 1911 census Charles (Senior) and wife Marian are living in Woodfall Street, Chelsea.

There was also another Harris.  Charles William (jnr) that does not show up in any census until 1911 when he is found living with wife Millie and son Charles in Chelsea.

Perhaps both Harry and Charles joined the armed forces at an early age.  This cannot be confirmed, however.

Regards,

Thank you Hanes & Jacques,

The Harry C HARRISS (Harris) I am researching was born 1881 Lambeth.  Unfortunately, I cannot find him in either the 1891 or 1901 census returns.  He later married M Pemberton, Lancs 1923.  I don't know why and when the name Harriss was adopted in this family line, all other members of family found were registered and continued to live and die as Harris!!

I confirm that I do have his birth cert and all other items i.e. place of birth, mother's names (both christian and former), father's name and occupation etc., all confirm Harry does belongs to the family I am researching.

Regards,

Gobbo and Valda,

Sorry I didn't come back to you straightaway - I have been frantically searching for the copy marriage certificate (terrible filing on my part).  I have now given up and am going to send off to the GRO for a new one this evening.  Please don't abandon me and I will come back when it is received.  Best wishes,  Rosie.

Canada / War Bride UK to Ontario 1946
« on: Monday 04 May 09 16:59 BST (UK)  »
How can find a relative who emigrated as a war bride to Ontario?   The marriage took place 1946 in the UK.  I have a copy of the marriage certificate and have found the details of her journey from Southampton to Ontario.  Any ideas where I can go from here?  Any assistance appreciated.  Bride and Groom were both born in the 1920s.

Thanks all,

With the help of the Ealng Electoral Roll and confirmation of what I found on the 1911; not to mention, your kind inputs,  this brick wall is down.

Best wishes, Rosie.

Thanks all,

I am now convinced that it was Sarah (poor lamb) in Lambeth Workhouse.  When I am in a better position to do so, I will see what I can find in the surviving records on that place.  It all seems to stop at Lambeth Workhouse.

Rosie.
