London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Help Please! - Henry TIPPING
« on: Tuesday 08 February 11 21:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Again.
I have a wedding certificate for a Henry Tipping & Eliza Read and a birth certificate for Henrietta Tipping, parents Henry Tipping and Eliza Ann, formerly Read, so I'm quite happy that she was Read. I also have a death certificate for Henry Tipping. All these certificates date between 11.1.1847 - 17.2 1847 (marriage, birth, death in that order).  Henry was only 29 - he died of cancer of the lungs, a risk from being a plasterer in those times.  It seems a sad story! Eliza also had her children baptised in March & April of 1847 - maybe to try and legitimise the ones born out of wedlock?

Hi
I'm not sure what happened to Clarissa (baptised Clara Sarah!) or Caroline, but I have found other children of William & Evelyn Spiers: Evelyn (1875), Harriett (1877), William Alfred (1879) and Minnie Louise (1881).  there was also a Henry James born in 1883 but he died in 1885.  Not sure what happened to all these children, although a William Alfred Spiers did marry in 1908 in Islington.
I also discovered that Evelyn, the mother, died in 1896.  She wasn't very old, maybe 45. In 1911 William is living with his three daughters, Evelyn, Clarissa & Caroline - I expect you've found that.  It seems that perhaps eldest daughter Evelyn didn't marry & stayed looking after her dad?

Thanks Millih
I recognise most of those names, but, funnily enough, hadn't found Edward's marriage.
I don't know any more about Lazarus Addis (great name!). Seems he may have abandoned his family...
I had some contact with someone whose wife was descended from the Gale family that Henrietta married into, but he didn't have any more information on the Tippings.
From the censuses it seems that Henry had other siblings - Rebecca, Frances & James at least. Other Tippings of a similar age living in the same area include Thomas, William and John, maybe other siblings?
I have also found a baptism for an Eliza Ann Read on 15.1.1817 in Leatherhead, parents Edward & Ann and of a brother, George Edward on 21.11.1819 - our Eliza says she is from Leatherhead on the 1851 census so this seems to fit.
On another note, I see you have Van der Westhuizen in your surname interests.  Is this a common name in SA? I have a friend in UK with that surname!

Hi Millih
I'm afraid I don't have any more info on Edward.  I wonder whether Edward Ernest (Ball) was named for his uncle Edward?
I have found many of the Tippings in censuses all living in the Cromer Street area of St Pancras, all in the building trade.  Also living in the area was Edward Read, carpenter, father to Eliza Ann. They were living there about the time St Pancras station and surrounding area was being built - I wonder if they were employed there? Mum & I had a look around that area recently, but sadly it has all been rebuilt, except for the station of course!
Edward Ernest was a bit of a naughty boy, leaving his first wife, and 5 children, for my Great Grandmother, who was much younger than him. We have found the divorce papers his wife served on him in 1923 - the first time women could file for divorce.  He then had 3 more children with my Gt Granny. We knew nothing of all this before starting our family research!
Do you have any more info about the Tippings?

Hi
Just looked at this thread.
My Great Grandfather was Edward Ernest Ball, son of John James Ball & Louise Annette Tipping.
What is your connection to the Tippings?
Interesting to read comments on Evelyn, she has had us wondering too.  You know, I hadn't spotted the discrepancy between her given birth date and the census.  She shouldn't have been born at the time of the 1851 census should she? Hmmmm... All a bit of a mystery really!

Norfolk / Re: Henry Bensley Allen born Wyndonham app 1820

Hello again
The marriage date I have I found myself in the Fransham parish records only last week.  It also ties in with a search the Norfolk family history Soc did for me.  However it would always be worth checking the other date in the records! (perhaps you could find out where pigginnut got the reference from?).  Moving forward with the family, as you have found, Henry had moved to Kent by 1851 and Frances, his sister, was in Leyton.
Other brothers and sisters of Henry & Frances baptised in Hindringham are Mary Ann (17.12.1815), William (7.9.1817), Charlotte (13.5.1821), John (9.3.1823), Thomas (1.4.1827 - buried 5.11.1828) and Thomas (28.6.1829).  Henry was baptised in April or May 1819 and Frances on 1.8.1824.
The family seem to have moved en-masse to London in the late 1840s. Mary Ann (married to a William Offord) was also in Leyton in 1851 and their brother, John, was living with them.  I'm not sure about William and Thomas but have found two by these names, both gardeners like Henry, one living in Putney and one a visitor in Bexley, Kent.  Charlotte I haven't come across but, of course she may have married.  By 1861 Henry was in Leytonstone and was then in Wanstead in 1881 and 1891.
Now to Thomas and Elizabeth!  I have a birth of Thomas Allen in Hindringham on 23.4.1788, baptised 27.4.1788 - this came from the Norfolk Family History Soc.  Also a possible burial of Thomas at Hindringham 16.6.1833 aged 46.  I found the baptism of Elizabeth Bensley and her twin brother Henry in Gressenhall parish records on 22.3.1790 and am fairly certain this is our Elizabeth.  There is also a burial of Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Allen, in Hindringham on 10.4.1835 aged 46.
A really interesting website for the Bensleys is http://www.ozigen.com/tree/main.htm
Elizabeth isn't listed but her twin is.  He emigrated with his family to Australia in 1852!  The information about his father may not be correct - I have a reference to check out that Henry Bensley, born 1751, married Mary Fisher on 4.6.1777 in Elsing, Norfolk.
Well, I hope that's enough to keep you going!  Do keep in touch and let me know how you get on.
Debbie

Norfolk / Re: Norfolk Parish Registers

Parish registers (from all over the country) are also available on micro film or fiche at some churches of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) - they also do the Family Search website.  There is one at Kings Lynn, one at Cambridge and one in Norwich that offer this.  You need to book a time on the phone to visit and check if they hold the registers you want or if you need to order them in (for a small fee).  I've found this service really useful - easier than travelling into Norwich all the time!

Hello there!
Henry Bensley Allen was the brother of my Gt gt gt grandmother, Frances Allen and was one of the witnesses at her wedding.  They were actually from Hindringham in Norfolk, Wyndonham is a mis-reading by the transcriber (it stumped us for a while too!).  They were the children of Thomas Allen and Elizabeth nee Bensley who were married 29.12.1814 in Great Fransham, Norfolk.  Thomas' parents were John Allen from Hindringham, and Frances Carrington from Walsingham.  Elizabeth's parents were Henry Bensley & Mary Fisher (this may be Riches as both families were in the area at the time, but it looks more like Fisher).  Elizabeth also had a twin brother, Henry.
You can trace the Carringtons back on the IGI as well as Frances Carringtons Mother Ann's family, Shorting, which goes back to c1595! (although I would like to verify the records myself in case of mistakes!).
If you would like more information about Henry Bensley Allen & his brothers & sisters let me know.
Debbie
