Family History Beginners Board / A real conundrum
« on: Tuesday 14 October 25 11:54 BST (UK)  »
My 6xgreatGrandmother Elizabeth Keightley bap 1734 married Samuel Orring bap 1730 in Shepshed, Leics. They had 7 children between 1754 and 1773. There's also in the same register Elizabeth Keightley bap 1734 and Richd Potter bap 1732 married in 1757 in Shepshed, Leics. They had 9 children between 1757 and 1776. I've been looking to see if Elizabeth had a sister and maybe the vicar messed up but I believe she's an only child. looking into burials Mr Potter dies in 1793 and Samuel Orring died in 1805. All this happening in the village of Shepshed (or Sheepshead). Can anyone come up with a possible solution. There are several spellings of Orring depending on the vicar on the day, that's fairly normal tho' right? ::)

Thanks Tom...it crossed my mind as another branch of the family, only slightly connected were all Ag lab and they all were in and around Hillmorton/Rugby
Sometimes I wish the family name was Crinklebottom or something else equally rare!

Hi Colin, thank you I have found others too I'm interested in finding out possibly why he finished up in Hillmorton. This is the only line that fits all my other criteria.
Regards Libby

I'm wondering if anyone can give me inspiration, John Watts b1713 in Yardley Hastings (Northants)married Mary Atkins b1713 In Hillmorton,Rugby(warks) on the parish register it says he was from Long Buckby (Northants) In the absence of any baptisms anywhere that fit I'm thinking that John must have moved around for employment but I have absolutely no idea in what trade to start looking, shoes, textiles run favourably in the family. I know it's a long shot but.......................?

On the census' 1881 and after they all declare Bohemia, or Austria,  British subject that's why I'm trying to find the records. I'm also trying to locate a copy of the book Immigration and Aliens that BerlinBob has mentioned previously.

Hi  GrahamSimons! my gggrandmother was only a small child when the family landed, I don't know how the system worked back then. Their name was Fochnrich and changed to Fendrick, I assume that was after they'd arrived. The only document I have is a smallpox certificate for the child maybe proving she was safe to travel. She was a British subject by the time she married in 1879.
Thanks for your suggestion :)

My gggrandmother was born in Prague, Bohemia in 1858 and emmigrrated with her parents to London,  in 1860 ish. Thanks to Fiddlerslass last year I found the records in the Prague city archives. I'm still working on translating it all but I'm getting close. What I can't find is any record of their journey, their change of status, eg naturalisation. If I could find out where to look I'd be happy..... :)
