Aberdeenshire / Re: Place names

Hi

Hope I can help shed some additional light. This is from the virtual church minutes on Scotland’s People. (Virtual Records/ Record Creator Search/Longside/Minutes 1748-1797/Pages 306-308).

The Longside Church Records for 1796 show that Katharine was indeed born illegitimately to William Park and Barbara Ligertwood - they both went through the typical church court for their ‘fornication’.

I strongly suspect, although can’t prove, that this is the same William Park who is my 5th Great Grandfather. He was born in Rathen in 1772 and moved to Longside in the years before he got married. He eventually married Elizabeth Carr (or Car) in 1799. They married in Longside. She was from Crimond (next to Rathen) and they settled at Wester Rora, a few farms over from Dumpston. He died in 1839 in Auchtydonald (also Longside). Elizabeth died in 1870, aged 94, also at Auchtydonald farm. William was an Agricultural Labourer.

As I say, I cannot confirm, but given locations and timings, it’s a very strong possibility this is the same William Park.

Funnily enough, my x6 Great Grandfather was the minister of the Episcopal Church in Longside - he would have maybe heard of the affair - although the Presbyterian and Episcopals weren't best friends.

Travelling People / Re: Gibson family.
« on: Tuesday 22 October 24 19:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

What can I add to this thread? I come down from Robert Gibson and Rose Ann Mullen (x3 Gt Grandparents). I see there is a lot of info on this thread already so I’ll try not to repeat (there might be some!).

To start with, Rose Ann was the daughter of Edward Mullen and Mary Ann Gordon. Edward was born in Ireland about 1828 to Hugh Mullen and Mary Carly and had the following siblings that I know of: Esther, John and Hugh. Mary Ann is a mystery on birth (some census Ireland others Aberdeenshire). She died 1894 on Fraserburgh Links - there’s a newspaper article about her funeral entitled ‘A Gypsy Funeral’ from that year that declares a great turnout. Mary Ann and Edward had 8 other children that I know of (William, Catherine, Mary Ann, Helen, John, Agnes, Edward Patrick, Anthony [named after Mary Ann’s father] and Elizabeth.

As for Gibsons. I have managed to dig a bit further back.

From my Robert (x3 Gt Grandfather), his father Robert and mother Ann Renwick (x4 Gt Grandparents) have been mentioned in this thread. The Renwicks btw head back through the years from Northumberland to Selkirkshire.

That Robert’s parents, Robert and Jean (both Gibson) (my x5 GG) have been listed here. I have no death records.

As far as I can tell through records, that Robert’s family line comes from East Lothian and Berwickshire. I have it back to 1690 if all correct.

That Jean’s parents:

As others have mentioned, were Alexander and Jean (Jane) (Irvine). Jean was born in Glasgow. Both Alexander and Jean (Jane) died in Dalkeith and are buried in Dalkeith New Cemetery (no grave marker or exact record of plot but Midlothian Council confirmed at least he is there). Their son John Brown Paterson Gibson (died 1881) is also buried in Dalkeith New Cemetery. No gravestone but I have found the plot. Their daughter Henrietta (died 1881) who married Peter Cairney is buried in the Watchtower Cemetery in Dalkeith - listing states a stone but I have yet to get access, a job for one day very soon. Henrietta was living in Brotherstone’s Close, Dalkeith when she died. That close no longer exists and jumps about in records of where it was, but def east side of Dalkeith High St.

I have Alexander’s father line going back to 1686 (his gt grandfather John) all in Ayrshire, Kilmarnock area. His mother’s (Jean Marshall) line is Kilmaurs, Ayrshire going back to 1672, allegedly her Gt Grandfather was William Marshall the King in Dumfriesshire.

I have Alexander’s wife Jean’s family as possibly kicking about Edinburgh but it's yet to be confirmed and needs way more work.

As for the other Rutherford brother, Agnes Gibson’s brother-in-law John, he headed to Canada where his descendants reside.

There are quite a few newspaper articles avail that I have found (court cases, accusations of witchcraft)….more so on Mullen side.

A lot of intermarrying and connections made.

For anyone coming down through Robert Gibson and Rose Ann Mullen I have found other graves in Aberdeen where a lot of the family ended up.

Aberdeenshire / Re: The name "Thirlow" or Thurlow Fraser

I see these census records aren't showing Denburn Mills.  Do these mills fall under a group?

I imagine the mill was named Denburn Mill, because it was situated on the small stream called “Den Burn”.
See the information on the old Ordinance Survey that Den Burn and the Corn Mill are recorded together in Parish of Tyrie [New Pitsligo]. Scroll down the page to the bottom to find the link to the map
https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/ordnance-survey-name-books/aberdeenshire-os-name-books-1865-1871/aberdeenshire-volume-90/39

Yes! The Denburn Mill is towards the bottom of what is locally called Mill Brae but officially called Church Street. The Den Burn itself runs through the village.

Hi all.

Previous local to the area here (grew up there) so if you want any insight on places, happy to advise.

Also, if you are researching Thurlow’s (born 1858) mother’s line (Isabella Mitchell), she is my x4 GtGrand Aunt. Her parents were my x5 gt grandparents, Peter Mitchell and Isabella Ironside.

Shout if you have any questions that can help.

Kind regards

Ayrshire / Re: Looking for marriage of Samuel Chalmers and Margaret Mathew.
« on: Thursday 06 January 22 18:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks, a little late to this thread but I think this might be the same Samuel Chalmers who is causing me a headache to solve.

My x2 gt grandfather John Chalmers was illegitimate, born to Marjory Laird and Samuel Chalmers in Aberdour, Aberdeenshire (1843). We’re at a total standstill as to who this Samuel is, he appears to avoid all census records. And no record of a Samuel born in the area that I can  find.

I do know that other Chalmers in New Aberdour were connected to our Chalmers, as my grandmother would visit them as ‘cousins’ (although what degree of cousin I don’t know).

I first thought Samuel may have been from that same Chalmers in Aberdour but not finding anything.

The chances of this being the same Samuel who is the father of Ann while at another farm in the north-east three years later are possible, I think as farm labourers did move farms at ‘feeing time’

If you do (or have) find any other info about Samuel you mention, please do let me know.

Best wishes
B
