Hugh McMillan and Christn Fergusson had a son John baptised in Balquhidder in 1839.

In 1841 in Strathyre, parish of Balquhidder, are
Widow Ferguson, 60: Chirstan Ferguson, 25; John Fergsuon, 20; John McMillan, 1.

in 1851, at 39 West End, Callander, are Hugh McMillan, 37, born Strontian, Argyll; Wife Christian, 33, born Comrie, Perthshire; John, 10 and Duncan, 6, both born in Balquhidder; and Daniel, 3 and Mary 1, both born Callander.

So Daniel was born in 1847/1848 in Callander, Perthshire.

In the 1861 census, at 43 Main St, Callandar are Hugh McMillan, 47; wife Christian 45, grandmother Christian Ferguson, 85; Donald (not Daniel), 13 and Mary, 11.

I will check the 1851 census, but it's probably Donald, not Daniel, age 3. If Daniel had been born in 1847/48 he'd have been 37 or 38 when married in 1885, not 33 as recorded (which could have been wrong of course) and 41 or 42 when he died at sea.

He was my great grandfather. There is confusion over his year of birth as his marriage certificate shows him as aged 33 (in 1885) but his death at sea entry shows him as age 32 (in 1889). His parents were Hugh McMillan and Christian or Christina Ferguson.
