Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Baptism of George Yewde, 1642
« on: Monday 27 December 21 14:09 GMT (UK)  »
Not a burial, it is from the christening pages for Frodsham St. Lawrence, viewable online at findmypast.co.uk

The preceding baptism entry shows Katherine Smale illeg., no parents listed,
so could the squiggle after George Yewde's name mean he also was illegitimate ?
It is unusual that not even a mother's name is listed.

There are no Yewde/Youd families living in Frodsham parish before 1708, so my guess is that George was born illegitimate, probably Gorstage in Weaverham parish, but christened more discreetly in neighbouring Frodsham parish.

Here is my George Youd (Yewde is a variant of Youd) in my YOUD collection:

Flemish origin for YOUD and YOUDS is just one of a few theories, nothing more. My current pet theory is that these 2 surnames could have Viking origins. The Wirral peninsula, home of the YOUDS, was colonised in 902 AD by a group of Vikings headed by Ingimund who had been expelled from their previous Dublin settlement.  Further west into Cheshire the earliest YOUD records are found in Little Budworth  in 1562.
This could be an explanation why virtually all YOUD and YOUDS are found in Cheshire and neighbouring North Wales. Maybe some YOUD DNA sample could prove or disprove this...

Found a theory about the YOUDEN/Uden etc. surname here:
