Derbyshire Resources & Offers / Re: Pinxton and South Normanton
« on: Tuesday 07 September 10 13:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi Trevor,

I'd be very grateful if you are still doing lookups to see if there is any mention of my HILL line in both villages.

I know there are dozens of them from the census records and across generations, they inter-married with the BALL and MOAKES families

In particular, I'm interested in Jonathan HILL, bn 1761 S Normanton, who married Elizabeth Nuthall bn 1767 Pinxton, and Elizabeth HILL bn 1825 Pinxton, who was a servant at Brookhill Hall and, allegedly, had a child by D'Ewes COKE, the hall's owner and who also owned the local collieries.

If it's too much, perhaps you can let me know the ISBN number of the book so that I can locate a copy for myself?

Thanks
Rob

Europe / Re: Kosky's to England from Poland spelt Blachskosky???
« on: Saturday 08 November 08 23:19 GMT (UK)  »
If it were transcribed phonetically from Polish, I'd guess at Blaczkowski or Blachowski. In Polish, a 'c' can have a guttral 'ch' sound, as in the scottish 'loch'

I have a book (Polish Surnames, Origins and Meanings), which shows that 10 years ago, there were 747 people living in Poland with the name Blachowski and 235 with the name Błachowski.

The name originates fron 'sheet metal, or tin', suggesting that in generations past the family were metal workers.

Ireland / Re: Finding a marriage - Help!
« on: Wednesday 02 January 08 14:05 GMT (UK)  »
Christopher,

He was with the 45th Regiment of Foot at the time, and his service record places him in Cork when he was discharged in 1818. It actually states that "the sum of £5.5.11/2d has been issued to George Alsop, to enable himself, his wife and one child to proceed to Dublin, a passage by sea at the public expense not having been provided for them".

There is no record of this child in later census records, but there is mention of a Margaret SHAIL (bn Ireland c1831) as a servant living with them in the 1851 census.

Unfortunately, his record doesn't state his religion, and his descendants were mainly baptised CofE, but some were either baptised Catholic or converted, just to confuse the issue even more!

Given the political situation at the time vis-a-vis Catholic emancipation in Ireland, though, I wonder whether a marriage between a British soldier and a Catholic have been accepted by her family, or indeed the community.

Good news, many thanks for the digging on this one!  :)

On IGI, Richard HENTON, son of Isaac HENTON, had a brother named Isaac bap Bef. 29 Dec 1748 but I've not found any marriage/children for him.

Speculating, it is possible that he may have been the father of the Isaac who married Ann GADSBY.  ???

<edit> Also on IGI is a marriage of Isaac HINTON and Elizabeth PAGET in Kingsbury, Warks on 08 Jul 1771. So far, I've found that they had one child named Isaac bap 01 May 1774, Bur Jun 1776.

It is feasible that this may have been 'our' Isaac - Kingsbury is only 15 miles from Sibson.

Derbyshire / Re: ALLSOPP - Researching Family Name

As another with Alsop ancestry on both maternal and paternal lines, I've seen almost all variations of spelling (including Awsup on one PR) even within the same family group.

Got me thinking. Do you 'autocorrect' the spelling as you transcribe it to your preference, or do you take the Curate's word and record it as written?

Nottinghamshire / Re: Decipher name of chap from Arnold
« on: Sunday 04 June 06 23:44 BST (UK)  »
Just a thought on this from another Arnold resident.

IGI shows only a few Henry B__ born in Arnold (found them via http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm)

One possible candidate is Henry Bryan, Bap Arnold, 20 May 1832. He's shown in the 1861 census at Donny Mount (?) lodging with William Cliff as a FWK. I can't see him in the 1851 census.

<edit>No, sorry. Just found him in the 1851 census as Henry Bryon, so not the one you're looking for.

US Lookup Requests / Cresswell in Scranton PA
« on: Monday 22 May 06 17:48 BST (UK)  »
Help, please!

After a number of years looking for this family, I think I might have found them in the USA. There are some Ellis Island records for them going to Chas CRESSWELL (son) at 962 Uxford St, Scranton PA.

Can some kind soul with access to the US census (1910 and/or 1920) confirm whether there is any record of Arthur CRESSWELL, born in Nottingham England in 1872 and his wife, Florence CRESSWELL (born Florence LOASBY in CambridgeEngland 1870)?

I've also lost their children, Maud, Lillian, Kathleen and Herbert, so if there is any record of them, that would be a bonus!

Can offer lookups here in Nottingham in exchange.  ;)

Rob/Sarah,

Just had to join in this thread because I am also descended from William Henton and Sarah Higgs  :)

My connection is through their daughter Ann that married Joseph Barnes in Kingsbury Warks on 12 October 1865.  I'm not sure that I can sort out the 2 Williams but mine seems to have been a labourer.

Rob, I have a copy the younger William's birth certificate, he was born on 5th December 1850 and this confirms that his mother's maiden name was Higgs.

I have not gone back much further with this line but would be happy to help if I can  ;)

Pinetree

Hi Cousin!

I'd love a copy of that certificate if you could scan it. I'll PM you my Email address.

I've still to get to the Records Office to try to sort this one out but based on what Sarah has said, I'm doubtful that this Isaac is the father of 'our' William (Bap 21 May 1816). I want to track back another generation or two and see who his father was. I've a feeling that there will be a connection in there, somewhere. I know that IGI shows Isaac & Ann, but need to see the PR for myself! The only Isaac on the IGI film for Sibson was bap 29 Dec 1748, which would make him 68 when William was born - unfeasible to expect him to be William's father without further checking, but he might be Isaac's father.

My files show Ann & Joseph as having four sons - Samuel, Joseph, William and Alfred, but haven't followed the line any further. If there is anything you would be willing to share, I can swap for my line!

I also realise that I didn't answer Sarah's question about where Isaac was in 1841. Details are:

The Lighter Side / How is this for a coincidence?
« on: Thursday 18 May 06 19:50 BST (UK)  »
Spent today staring at a fiche reader in the local archives, looking for two completely different ancestors (one from my maternal line and one from my paternal line) from three hundred years ago. From what I'd found previously, I knew they came from the same small town, and had approx dates for their baptisms, but was amazed to see them both on the same page of the PR, baptised less than two months apart in 1710!

Made me wonder if they met and agreed that their 4th Gt Grandchildren should marry.  :)

(Think I startled one or two other researchers with my "Bloody Hell!" exclamation)
