Buteshire / Which John McNeil (1719 or 1720)
« on: Sunday 23 January 22 18:21 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for the JOHN MCNIEL, married to MARY WHYTE, in Rothesay, Bute, Scotland (parents of JAMES MCNIEL b. 1756). There is no marriage listed on SP for John and Mary.

There seems to be two John McNeil s in Rothesay as possible matches on SP (JOHN MCNEIL b. 1719 [ARCHIBALD MCNEIL/JANET NCGILCHENZY] and JOHN MCNEIL b. 1720 [JOHN MCNEIL/CATHRINE NCLEA]).

I've had conflicting information as to which one is correct. Is there a way to know which one is the right John McNeil?

I did as you suggested and dug deeper, and found a little more!

The ARCHIBALD MCNEIL born 1697 to NEIL MCNEIL and KATHARIN NCINTYRE  is not the one I was looking for.

I found ARCHIBALD MCNEIL born 1682, listed as married to JANET MCGILCHERAN (I'm finding every source having her name spelled somewhat differently, this one is from Ancestry). They have three children listed:
JAMES MCNEIL- 1716
JOHN MCNEIL - 1718 (Feb.1719 on SP)
JEAN MCNEIL - 1722

The JOHN MCNEIL listed is the one married to MARY WHYTE.

ARCHIBALD MCNEIL (1682) doesn't have parents listed, nor could I find an Archibald McNeil with parents coinciding with the birth year on SP.

The only McNeil I could find born in 1682 on SP was an unknown forename MCNIEL born  2/1682 to DONALD MCNIEL and JONET LITTLEJOHN
Kilmadock

I'm not sure how to verify if these are the same.

Would the ARCHIBALD MCNEIL (married to JANET  NCGILCHENZY) be the same as the one born to NEIL MC NEIL and KATHARIN NCINTYRE 1697 in Rothesay?

Hi!

I've been researching my family lineage of MacNeill (The name has changed many times going back) for both myself and my grandmother, but I can't seem to find anything about my early 1700s grandfather.

James McNiel (b.1756, Rothesay, Bute, Scotland) is the son of John McNiel (b.1721?) And Mary Whyte (b.1725?). He is married to Christian McAlister (b.1769?) - they're the parents of Robert McNeill (b.1797) who migrated to Nova Scotia in the early 1800s, but I don't know what ship or year.

I'm looking for anything on John McNiel and hopefully a few more generations back; I can't find any concrete birth or parents that match for him.

Can anyone help me get farther back in my history?

Scotland / Re: Trying to find a Robert McNeill b. 1797/1798 in Scotland

I've looked all over for James McTyre in Nova Scotia and he is nowhere to be found.

The name Barbara isn't one I've seen in the Crowe or Barnhill families. The name Rebecca is.

It could be that Robert's parents were John and Barbara. Mary Crowe's father is recorded as Thomas but it is possible he was a "Thomas James" or "James Thomas".

There is a family from Scotland who settled an area in the same county not too far from Masstown. They were the Lewis family, some records indicate they were from Kirkcudbright. Perhaps that is where Robert was from

The only Robert I can find in Scotland born at a fitting date to be 73 in the 1871 census is a Robert McNeill b. 19 Dec 1797, Rothesay, Bute to James McNeill and Christian McAlister. James McNeill was the son of John McNeill and Mary Whyte, Christian the daughter of Robert McAlister. John was apparently the son of a John McNeill and Janet McConachy/Duncan. John McNeill who married Mary Whyte named his eldest son Archibald... but his fathers name was not Archibald.

My Robert was a shoemaker and some of the Lewis's who came to the same county in Nova Scotia were shoemakers.

EDIT: However, there is a James Tyre born 1796, Kingarth, Bute. I wonder if that is the James McTyre who was with Robert McNeill in 1825.

I also notice in the information I have that Mary Crowe's grandfather is James. Is it possible that they were following a sort of naming tradition in which the parents grandparents names were sometimes used?

I'm researching for my family heritage of him as well!
You listed Robert McNeill's parents and grandparents - where were you able to find that information? And do you have any birth/death years or dates for them?

Thanks!
