I think the shop in Warrington was in the back streets and was a grocers shop

But he was a pawnbroker by 1911 (per census and John junior's baptism)
Yes, he was a pawnbroker but his wife Elizabeth was a grocer in 1911.
Interestingly the Warrington property, 110 Algernon St, is not listed in the 1939, it leaps from 109 to 111?

If there was nobody in the premises on the night of the census, then nobody would have been recorded there. The census is asking the question, "Who is here this night?" so non-residential premises would have not had a record, and people away from home should have been enumerated where they were at the time.

I think the shop in Warrington was in the back streets and was a grocers shop. I think the family lived over the shop as that is the address on my fathers birth certificate.

The shop in Manchester I am unsure if they lived there over the shop but assume they did as they bought a new 3 bed semi in another part of Manchester for £750 in the late 1930's.
The trouble is I can't find any family with the right names on the 1921 in Manchester, and that's whats confusing me.

The 1929 Directory is on Ancestry. I just searched for "Ashton Old Road" as a keyword.

This link will take you to image 1878 - click on the image, change 1878 to 106 and click on "Go".

1929 Manchester Directory has Evans, Jn, Pawnbroker at 444 and 446 Ashton Old Road

Looking for earlier ones.....
That's the one, can I ask where you are looking at the directory from, I couldn't find any online.
Ancestry only seems to go down to 1933?

ShaunJ,
The names I am looking for are,
John Evans, GF,  born 1881 in Liverpool
Elizabeth Ann Evans, GM, born 1883 in Warrington
Lilian Mary Evans, Aunt, born 1907 in Warrington
John Francis Evans, Father, born 1911 in Warrington
Sydney Thomas Evans, Uncle, born 1914 in Warrington

Possible places,
110 Algernon St, Warrington
444 & 446 Ashton Old Road, Openshaw, Manchester

I did also try the whole of Lancashire but returned no obvious results.

Thanks

I'm looking through Ancestry's content at the moment, I don't have a Findmypast subscription.

Hi,
I have tried all variant options to click or enter part names I have come across in the past, but no joy.

I find it strange that in the address search the property numbers are missing, but adjacent properties are there.

I have found a kelly's directory for 1933 with my GF name and the address in question.
I have not found any directories for Manchester and Salford going back to 1920's, does anyone know if they exist?
