Lincolnshire / Re: Well, Lincolnshire, Gamekeepers injured/killed

During the 1850s in the same general area, my grandfather was fined 2/6d for poaching a rabbit! 20 years before that his great uncle was transported for life guilty of highway robbery. If I were Australian I would be an aristocrat!

If it was in or near Well I would be interested to know their names and where it actually happened since they were caught perhaps there are court records with that info?

Thank you so much for your quick replies.  It is appreciated.  I will think of the those trains thundering past every time I drive by.  It seems to be part of a public footpath now.  Thanks again.

Thank you so much for your help.  I think there was about 20 children in the village then between 5 and 12 which surprised me.  Perhaps they just called it 'the school' so no need for a name....  Thanks again for your quick help.

Lincolnshire / Railway Crossing at Well, Lincolnshire
« on: Saturday 21 August 21 10:24 BST (UK)  »
There used to be a railway crossing a road in Well, Nr Alford, Lincolnshire, close to the Cricket Club.  Does anyone know anything about it?  There was a railway station 2 miles away in Alford so presumably the railway line crossed the road into Well.  Anyone got any photos of the crossing?

Lincolnshire / Well, Lincolnshire, Gamekeepers injured/killed

I am researching two incidents of GameKeepers shot in Lincolnshire.  One was William Dadley, Gamekeeper murdered in Well, Nr Alford, Lincolnshire, on his Wedding Day.  No one was brought to justice for this murder.

The other one is in the same area George Middleton, poacher, shot Charles Pollard, gamekeeper, in 1876.  He was shot but I don't know how badly injured or if it went to court, I think it may have been.  Any info would be appreciate.  Thanks.

Does anyone know about a school in Well, Nr Alford, in Lincolnshire?  I don't even know the name.  I can find no trace of it but have met people who knew people who went there.  It must have been very small, perhaps only a handful of younger children.  Just the name would give me a start in my research.  Thanks.

World War Two / WW2 soldiers & POWs at Well nr Alford in Lincolnshire

I am told there was a POW camp (followed perhaps by some kind of school/training camp) in the woods in Well, nr Alford in Lincolnshire.  Do you know anything about this camp?  The remains are still there and I think it was used for several years.  Any information would be welcome.
