Scotland / Re: Baptism Record for George Mather/Mathers

Thank you for the detailed reply, Goldie.

You’re correct—Andrew is Elizabeth’s father. I was fortunate to be able to trace that particular Hunter line back to the late 16th century in Tranent.

On FreeReg (where I found the witnesses), the surname was transcribed as “Mathers” rather than “Mathews.” I’ll try searching under “Mathews” on Scotland's People and see if I have any luck. Thanks for the suggestion.

I haven’t looked at the kirk records yet. Hopefully, I’ll find some more information—perhaps mortcloth dues. I still don’t know when he was born.

Thank you again

The distance between Colinton and the village of Ballencrieff, where George and his family lived, was quite far to travel in that time period. So you're probably right that his baptism record was destroyed or never noted.

Thank you both for your help. :)

Scotland / Baptism Record for George Mather/Mathers
« on: Sunday 29 June 25 15:45 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm having some difficulty locating a birth or baptism record for George Mathers. He had two children with Elizabeth Hunter in the parish of Aberlady, East Lothian:

  • Anne, baptised on 7 February 1730, witnessed by Andrew Hunter
  • Andrew, baptised on 12 May 1734, witnessed by James Bane and Andrew Hunter

There doesn't appear to be an abundance of Mathers in Aberlady, so perhaps he moved from another parish. However, I've searched for his name on ScotlandsPeople and haven't found any results for East Lothian.

Thank you for any assistance. :)

I appreciate the advise Pheno. I wish I had her birth record to confirm her age.

WolfeEye,

This would be much better on the Europe forum.

Thank you, I just noticed I posted on the wrong forum.

Hello there,

I've had some difficulty locating a birth/baptism record for Sigri Jacobsdatter Udgaardsbraaten. I believe I've finally found the right baptismal record, but it doesn't match the age stated in her burial record.

For some context, Sigri had a child out of wedlock with Haagen Torstensen from the village of Udgaarden in Vinger parish. According to her burial record, she died from childbirth on the 28th of April 1828 at the age of 26. So her year of birth would be around 1802.

I combed through the birth/baptismal records for Vinger parish and found a Sigri Jacobsdatter Udgaardsbraaten who was baptised on 7 June 1807.

Do I have the right person? And is there any explanation for the discrepancy between the age in her baptismal and burial records?

Thanks.

Thank you again for all your help.

Do you know if there are any records that contain more information about these testimonies? I'm hoping I can find the father of Agnes and Erland by consulting them.
