Hi Wivenhoe, I have already answered a couple of your questions.  I saw the date of the photo of Sgt William Hugh Laing on the back of his photo in uniform 1st June 1913.  Also the number was on the back of the Medals, that I have now found out earlier today were Badges, issued to men who had tried to enlist in the Army and were rejected because they were Medically unfit.  I William Hugh Lings case he had flat feet.

I was after the department, where I could obtain the record.  I wasn't needing anyone to look for me, so all the details you suggested were not necessary to give. What was necessary was for me to let folk know where I had already looked so they would waste time doing a search.

Since this morning, I did a google for the Medal/Badge and found a similar one and found it and another one with required for Home Service, a Badge was awarded to men who had volunteered for service and rejected or were required for home Service as many were jeered at as letting the country down for not joining as they never wore a uniform. A certificate was given at the same time. So help is still needed to find where the Badge and certificate information can be found.  My son went to the Army Museum in the Old Goall adjoining the Anglesea Barracks today, but they said to go to the National Archive of Hobart.  I thought that was the same place as Tasmanian Archives of Hobart.

The photo of the Medal comes from my brother in law who has two of the Badges. I dont know the significance of the numbers on the back.  Maybe just the issue number.

So if you know where to find the Records of these men who were rejected for being Medically unfit, Wivenhoe, that is all that is needed. Thanks for responding

Can you clarify the information here, so that the forum can use to best advantage in assisting you.

* William Hugh Laing was awarded two Medals....what are the medals

* dates of his service 93rd Reg 1913..................where do you see this information?

* have photo dated 1 June 1913 and for the 12th Reg 1915.......Is this one photo or two?

* They say Medically unfit volunteer on them.
You have mentioned medals and a photo. Where are you seeing "medically unfit" written?

* Both had a number on them. Both...what?...photo?...medal?...file?.  What are the numbers?

* Another was found with another number so not sure if any of the were Soldiers service number.
...what is the other number, and what is it on, and how did you find it?

Where you mention documents, medals, photos.....are they family artifacts, or are you finding them online?

Using National Archives Australia for service enlistment, I do not see anything for William Hugh LAING.

I hope I am in the right place.  I am looking for the records for the 93rd Battalion.  I believe from TROVE Newspapers, this was a Senior Cadet type Regiment.  I also need the records for the 12th Battalion please.  We are having trouble finding any records have already consulted, War Museum in Canberra, also NAA Canberra, now the Army Museum in Hobart, the Queen Victoria Museum in Invermay. We have yet to try the National Archive of Hobart when time permits.  I thought i would try Rootschat as it has solved problems before. William Hugh Laing was awarded two Medals, dates of his service 93rd Reg 1913, have photo dated 1 June 1913 and for the 12th Reg 1915.  They say Medically unfit volunteer on them.  Both had a number on them.  Another was found with another number so not sure if any of the were Soldiers service number.  Has any one else have a ancestor who was rejected but allowed in this 93rd Battalion and later 12th Battalion.  93rd was a Derwent Tasmania Regiment. There was one for Launceston it was 92nd Reg. William was a sergeant in the photo dated 1913. That was just before WW1. He was Tasmania based did not do overseas service.

Hi, sorry internet problems meant I gave up trying to load anything yesterday.  I found the lair but I'm afraid there's no headstone.  I did search the area round about in case there was a tablet that had been displaced or broken and I didn't see anything.

I've attached a pic anyway.  The stone lying down is 279, for once it's clearly marked, and 280 is to the right.

Hi Everyone, it has been some time since I wrote to Rootschat wwith alot of help given and received.  I am now interested in the OLd Cemetery Cathcart.  I have seen an entry in a series of Books of Monuments of Renfrewshire. Not quite the title Page 9, Vol One. I am very interested in the entries for the Smith family in th cemetery, as our elusive John McARthurs mother was a Margaret Smith and we have yet to find her. There is a Margaret Smith that fits the age we need for John McArthur mother. We haven't found anything in Scotland for John but have his marriage certificate.  No birth or where has surfaced but he was in Cathcart,Renfrewshire at the time of his marriage held at Cambuslang 2 Dec 1856. These entries interest me and hop there is more info. No 73. James Smith died or buried 5 Jul 1854 aged 89. His wife Margaret Mior 13 Jan 1835 aged 70. dau, Margaret 9 Oct 1856 aged 55, it then says s Jas, Superintendant of Police, Glasgow.  Our John McArthur, used to be a Sunday School President at patersonia, Tasmania where died and is buried in the churchyard in Tasmania and he was a lay preacher.  This makes me wonder if James Smith was a Church Minister (I know there was a Rev James Smith in CAthcart, but no details) and they brought him up. Johns Marr Cert says his father was Duncan McArthur amd mther Margaret Smith, but no marriage for his parents. John would have been living in Cathcart at the time of this Margarets death and burial, then he had marriage banns at Cathcart, but married in Cambulang then he and Isabella Stevenson, his wife left for Tasmania on the Broomielaw on the 20th Dec 1856. He has left no details in any document. His wife Isabella left a illegitimate dau, that a nice lady on Rootschat helped me with and we have since  located famiy of that daughter on the mainland Australia. Stevenson family as well. No McArthur DNA has emerged in Familytreedna, MyHeritage or Ancestry.com to date. What happened to the son James the Superintendant of Police at Glasgow as his family may help.  Thanks for any clues.
