Surname Interests is one of the options.

When asking for help, please remember to include the 4 "W"s - Who, What, When, Where.

Thanks for you help and I will keep the 4 W's in mind going forwards too

Living in Aldbourne Wiltshire. 1851
Piece 1686

G. CASSWELL. (my reading)

On the original image the double s is formed in the old fashioned way which resembles a lower case f.
A trap when one is not used to it. ::)
It has been transcribed as CAPWELL, but I think this is wrong.

Does anyone have any thoughts on it?

This man is aged 17 Born on Ogbourn St Geo. and is a groom in a household headed by Thomas Kenson, a farmer of 500 acres.

Census 1851 possibility for some other family members

Living at Ogbourn St George.

William CASWELL, Head aged 60. Ag Lab. born Overton Wilt.
Jane CASWELL, wife aged 21
And a lodger

Errors in census reportings are common.  I would venture to suggest that Jane is not wife, but daughter to William.  See 1841.

Next door but one to William is -

Thomas CASWELL. Head aged 25. Ag Lab. born Ogbourn St Geo.
Eliza Ann CASWELL. Wife aged 23. Born Ogbourn St Geo.
Henry . Son aged 3.

Sue

Thanks for this Sue,

I never knew about the old fashioned double s resembling a lower case f so i'll keep that in mind during my research.

I would agree that must be an error in the record as his daughter Jane was born in 1830 which puts her at 21 in the 1851 census.

The family next door but one are, Williams Son Thomas who married Eliza Ann Simms. Their son Henry was born in 1848, which again makes the ages line up, I was unable to find these so thanks for your help!

Is this John Matthews death in 1879?
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1879/06529/4881515.pdf

If so, There is a newspaper snippet 7th January 1879 which mentions him being the son of ‘the late John Matthews. vicar Choral of St Patrick’s Cathedral’. I can’t work out which John has the title.

However, I searched and this came up - I think these people have posted on this thread

Hi Heywood,

That sounds about right, I have his death listed as 7th Jan 1879 which would coincide with that newspaper article, however I believe he died on the 5th now, thanks for your help. I need an account to see the records on the irish genealogy so I will create an account later.

Thanks, Ashley

Thank you both for your help, I was wondering if there was a way to do this!

Can I also add surnames to my post signature the same way? I see a lot of people have their interests at the bottom of each post but I haven't been able to work that out yet.

England / Surname Interests - Please Help! Blay / Sherfield / Caswell / Welch
« on: Friday 02 July 21 18:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am new to Roots Chat and am researching my family, I have hit a few dead ends and have come here to hopefully get some help from others researching the same families and maybe even find some relatives  :)

I am searching more on my maternal side as my father left when I was 2 years old so I have little to no information on his side, however is anyone has information on the Clough / Matthews / Docwra, from Essex , Ireland and Fuham/Chelsea respectively then I would be grateful to learn more.

Predominantly I am researching my mothers side, my surname interest are as follows:

Blay Family - I believe origins are Berkshire

Sherfield Family - Origins of Bentley, Hampshire, however I know my uncle migrated to Canada so there may be family over there too

Caswell Family - Berkshire / Wiltshire - however I may have crossed my wires on this side

Welch Family - Chertsey / Lynne / Thorpe

However I am also researching my ancestors on the Wells (Surrey), Allen (Surrey), Riddick (Surrey), Axten (Buckinghamshire), Rosam (Surrey) and Gosden (Surrey) families.

Most of my family on the Blay and Caswell side that remain are still living in the Chertsey/Addlestone area.

I would love to get in touch with more family and share our research if you feel you are connected to my line.

Thanks so much for reading and I look forward to seeing if anyone has any further information!

Hi All,

I am unsure if this is still active but upon reading this i believe i may be related to some of you and the ancestors discussed however i have not managed to link them into my own tree yet,

would anyone be able to assist? my father and his side of the family have been absent since i was 2 so i have no information or relatives to get much info from..

this is what i have so far, if anyone could validate and help me trace back further or add to my info i would be very grateful..

My Great Grandfather was Edward H Matthews (1918-1991) m. Joan Ellen Docwra

My GG Grandfather was George Humphries Matthews m. Lilian Christina Langron

My GGG Grandfather was William Henry Dundas Matthews m. Mabella Louisa Davies

My GGGG Grandfather John Matthews (1802-1879) - I have no information further back than him, nor do i have a wife so i have reached a dead end.

I would be grateful for any help if anyone is able to assist

Thank You

Sue

Hi Sue,

Thanks for this, perhaps this is why I am unable to find them in 1841 or 51. I have no Idea why they would be listed as Cartwell but the family names and ages roughly line up. I'll see what I can dig up based on the name Cartwell.

Thanks for your assistance

Welcome to rootschat  :)

Again following down from William (1790-1868)  who m. Mary Morse (1792 - 1866)

My line continues from their child George Caswell (1833 - 1892) who m. Sarah Ann Huntley (1839 - 1910)

and their child, my GGG-Grandfather John Caswell who Married Amelia Riddick.

Just tracking backwards ..

William Caswell married Mary Morse on 21 Feb 1814 at  Ogbourne St George.  An online tree has William & Mary on census in Ogbourne in 1861 where do you have them in 1841 & 1851

Hi Rosie99,

I am unable to find them in any census except the 1861, I am quite stuck on this line of my family at the moment so I am hoping someone else has found something more concrete than what I am currently working with.

I do have an 1851 Census which has a William Caswell, in Ogbourne, the age adds up to the d.o.b I have however his wife on this census is Jane so I am not too sure if this my one or not sadly.

I will keep looking and post back if I find anything more

Thanks for you help
